Honestly segmented sword would be hella cool. Like each segment having runes to channel magic or stuff like that.Still keen on my thought of borrowing from Type-0 and giving the mystic knight a whip sword. Make it a reverse Red-mage and have it stick with melee and have a damage phase where they have longer range (hop back optional to prevent hopping back off a platform when you want to do a DPS up phase.)
I don't think the argument of overlap and redundancy was ever in question, as you have suggested. Rather, it was a question of how to differentiate two concepts that share similarities.
Many people have theorized that a Mystic Knight, or any of its named variants, could still be implemented and feel functionally different from RDM. The biggest outlier has always been Time Mage, since many of its aspects are still too ingrained in AST to offer something most players would call unique. However, that isn't to say it couldn't be done, but that it would be harder.
Theoretically, a Mystic Knight could functional similarly to a Monk and swap between Astral and Umbral stances and choose a corresponding element to attack with as a weapon skill. With skills like, Flametongue, Ice Brand, Liquid Steel, Spark Strike, whatever the Wind and Earth variants are, lol. But skills that indicate an elemental attack without casting a spell first.

Yeah it'd be totally doable honestly. But I saw a few disaggreeing vehemently, saying that PLD was already the mystic knight x)I don't think the argument of overlap and redundancy was ever in question, as you have suggested. I guess for 7.0 they may just do tank/healer. I mean we have a ton of DPS now, might be wise to take an expansion off. DPS are popular jobs, for sure but we can sit out one expansion.
If they go tank, I'm expecting a hammer/mace class. Might as well make it XIV exclusive, and name it Templar.
For Healer, huge demand for Geomancer and Chemist remains. Though ALC is a DoH, they can name it Salvemaker (ala Bravely Default) and have them use a wrist mounted slingshot as a weapon.
We just got a new healer though, I don't think one more will be added so soon after the healer roles have been reworked.I guess for 7.0 they may just do tank/healer. But we're in the DPS thread, so let's focus on how a DPS Rune Fencer/Spellblade/Mystic Knight could work![]()
Ok I'll start then.
I was thinking of having a few spell-like "En-[spell]" abilities. Each with a casting time.
Let's say: En-Fire I, En-Thunder I and En-Ice I.
When using one it does damage to your target, and gives you a buff for the next 45 seconds (placeholder number, I am not as well versed into balancing etc as some of you).
This buff will change how your weapon-skills interract with each other, or give them special properties.
For example: En-Fire reduces your GCD and ability cooldown by 2% per weapon-skills performed during duration of the effet (to a maximum of, say, 15% reduction). At maximum stack it makes your next cast instant (so you can instantly cast your next En-spell).
I recently finished watching Castlevania on Netflix and I think a character centered around Trevor Belmots fighting style would be cool. A whip class. DPS or Tank class. I think Richter Belmont in the later series was able to use magic too.
"Brotherhood asked for no friendship, only loyalty. They stood back to back as the galaxy burned - always brothers, never friends; traitors together unto the last."
--an excerpt from a Night Lords Novel, "Void Stalkers" Chapter X: Revenge.
So back on the idea of a segmented whip-sword thing like Seven in type-0 ?
Maybe, whip-segmented sword would be pretty nice, we only have Seven with something like that, plus she is the Spellblade of the game if I recall. And Garland in the dissidia games I guess.
Or it could be something simpler and going for a dual-wield setup with 2 swords, maybe attaching into a staff alà Gabranth.
Names could be stuff like: Materia Blades of X, Spellblades of X, Runic Swords of X... (like we have Manatrigger, Gunblade and Baillonette for the different gunblades)
