To be clear, the advice about eating the onion is only once your bird reaches level 10. Before then, it gets exp for kills that are near your level(and the bonus exp for challenge log). Once you hit 10 it stops getting experience at all(even in fates) and you need to feed it the onion to increase its maximum level so it can earn exp again.
