You absolutely cannot do it this way. This is how kickstarters get delayed two years.Step 1: Have a pre-order period (multiple days). Example: from date 5/14/2021 to 6/30/2021. Send emails to account holders before, mid-way and at end with the dates and times. God knows I am always getting store emails from you for things you are selling.
Step 2: Total the pre-orders. The technical term for this is "addition" (足し算). For example: 7 + 3 = 10 (七足す三は十です。)
Step 3: Use the number from step 2 to determine the number of units to make. Hey, you might make a few extra just in case!
Supply chains are not infinitely scalable. There must be an upper limit. By the way, there's also a pandemic on, so supply chains are even less scalable than they were two years ago.

Yes, you can. There are tons of gaming companies that do their pre-orders along these lines. There may still be an upper limit, but they get the temperature of demand for a period first. I've bought CEs from Ubisoft for Assassin's Creed for years and never had issues even months down the line because they didn't do this limited run bullshit.
Of course you can. There is not an infinite number of FFXIV players nor do all of them want the Collector's Edition. Many other goods in this world are produced at much larger volumes. And as I pointed out as the collectables are not necessary to play they can be produced in batches. If there was truly an issue with being able to produce enough they would be better off with a lottery system for account holders to introduce at least a semblance of fairness. It is one thing to be disappointed but another to be actually angry. This was no way to do the release. I had been up since early morning for work (Eastern time zone). I kept checking the store (which was completely down; no items at all) right after the they showed the Collectors Edition. It did not appear they were releasing any time soon and eventually people need to sleep. They sent the email to me about the expansion at 12:50 AM right before they decided to go live at 1 AM EDT! Most of the East Coast is asleep and got completely screwed. I am sure these sets do not exist yet and need to be produced so they should just take the orders and work it out.

I was really disappointed I didn't even get a time or date listed for me to even attempt to buy the collector's edition. I've had the physical collector's edition ever since Heavenwards. I really hope they do a second release.
Yeah didn't get mine either but it is still in my order list but I can't do nothing with it.
And I have all the CE from 1.0 till shadowbringers so yeah if I mis this one I will be uncomplete ;(

I'm going to be honest: I'm not surprised this happened. It happens with everything now because the pandemic created this scalper issue. I do hope people get it that want it, though.

Yeah, I was hitting refresh on the SE store the second they started talking about these items. I was not surprised to find out that the site was crashing but I still kept trying while watching the keynote stuff. I continued to try from that point until the end of the keynote. Since I was getting nowhere I took a break and logged in to the game and hopped on a hunt train. On a whim I decided to check the site again, and this time I was able to get through. When I added the box to my cart, I was put into a queue (my number was 61,000 and some change...oof) so I just immediately assumed that I was not getting this thing, considering there was still a few thousand people ahead of me. Took a few minutes but they let me through to purchase it. Got my confirmation email about 25 minutes later. I don't recall pre-purchasing an FF XIV CE ever being this stressful. lol Seriously though, they were available for days in the past, if not longer. If I had waited until morning after I woke up I'd have missed out entirely. They could have handled this a lot better. Most people were still watching the keynote when this was all going down. I think they should have waited until today at least to put them up for pre-order to give more people a chance.

They really need to make ALL the statues available again. They are going for $$$$ on auction sites even without the codes.

Guys, since we are having another Fanfest tonight, maybe we should relay this situation in the live chat so Yoshi P can see how bad it is.
It may not change anything, but it is better than nothing, I will surely keep saying the same thing in the live chat tonight until it ends or get notice.

That, and the point they made about kickstarters doesn't really hold in the case of a large established company with SE's resources.Yes, you can. There are tons of gaming companies that do their pre-orders along these lines. There may still be an upper limit, but they get the temperature of demand for a period first. I've bought CEs from Ubisoft for Assassin's Creed for years and never had issues even months down the line because they didn't do this limited run bullshit.
