I don't understand why they don't want more races

It's just not worth the company's time and effort for the monetary benefits it reaps which is why the devs have to do it as a passion project on the side. Want more new races to be added or Hroth/Vieras to get more hairstyles/headgear? Buy more mogstation costumes with your Hrothgar/Viera. It's how this things work and it's verifiable in other games.

In TERA every costume is the same for all races except for Elin that get a unique model, and every new class that was added to the game was either Elin only first, or were made for Elin at a latter date. When confronted as to why this was a thing, the devs simply out said "the resources and time available we have only allow us to create animations, costumes,etc. for only one race and we just pick up the most popular one. want to see an Aman brawler then start buying more costumes as an Aman to show us that people are actually interested in it". When the devs say "us" they mean the executives and investors that have to approve said decisions.

After countless complaint/whine threads because of Hrothgar and Viera I am honestly a surprised this is even a question.

Hell even I still gripe about the hair.

My question is would you want to add new races if you were insulted and complained to for your hard work instead of a hey thanks for this?

Companies do not make financial decisions based on consumers gratitude towards them. I'm sure we would all be really grateful if Square Enix came out and said "hey FFXIV is going free to play", but it wouldn't work out well financially for them unless they added some shady microtransaction schematic like most f2p MMOs use, at which point the player gratitude would end.

Rudeness and complains will however affect devs enthusiasm towards side projects. However I believe what the OP of the thread was asking is why Square Enix the company in charge of FFXIV does not want to add new races, to which answer is it's just not financially sound.

I'm pretty certain you're vastly overestimating the number of players who will fantasia to a new race vs. the number of players who simply don't care or will make an entirely new character for free instead. There are players who are fantasia addicts (I had a friend in HW who was a new race and gender combo every week), but I'll bet someone else's firstborn that the bulk of the playerbase don't and won't fantasia often enough for that to be the sole justification for making a new race.

Personally, I will happily accept the races we have now (with the completion of fem.Hrothgar), and just ask that instead of more races going forward, we just get more and more customization on the races we do have. I feel like in the long run that is a very fair trade off.

I mean, let's tackle the question in a different way. If Yoshi P came out and said "sorry, no new expansions after Endwalker...but we WILL add a new race every year though!", how long do you think the game will be able to keep up it's playerbase and current subscription fee?

When you realize the answer to that question, you will understand why Square Enix prioritizes their resource investment in other content and areas rather than new races.

We should be demanding a 1-2 new races every expansion, 3-5 new jobs every expansion, and 5-10 dungeons every patch.

Personally, I will happily accept the races we have now (with the completion of fem.Hrothgar), and just ask that instead of more races going forward, we just get more and more customization on the races we do have. I feel like in the long run that is a very fair trade off.

Yeah, my personal wish would be that 6.x-7.0 fem hrots and then 8.0/9.0 CC revamp with the possible engine rework that may enable them to add it with a bit more ease than it would be now

Might want to reread the replies then. No one is defending the decision, OP's question was he didn't understand why square enix doesn't want to add more races, and the replies were helping him understand why square enix doesn't want to add more races.

Should we be expecting more? Sure but as long as the majority of people continues to pay their subs, buy mogstation items, collectibles, limited edition statues, etc why would the company do anything but maintain the status quo when that already gives them exactly what they want?
You have to ask yourself, what does SE get out of giving us more content? We still pay the same amount monthly for our sub, we still pay the same of amount of money for expansions and people wil most likely still buy the same amount of mogstation stuff.

I'm all for the dev team getting more staff and a higher budget to give us a better game but there needs to be some incentive that motivates the higher-ups to do so, and right now I'm not really seeing that, the game is still growing with the budget and content schedule it currently has.

They would most likely have to see the game stagnate instead of grow first before they think about changing anything.

And hey, maybe that happened, maybe they did get a higher budget for this expansion, we won't know until it actually releases unfortunately.
