Yeah it's disappointing. I was really hoping for something like Campaign from XI, where players come and go as they please.
But then I thought about how the actual areas are designed, with only one entrance and no real strategic areas to divert mobs to, and I realized that that wouldn't have really worked either, everyone would just bock the main entrance and that'd be that.
So I guess this way they're doing it is probably the best they could do considering level design and server issues (which I guarantee are the main root of the problem). Come 2.0 I hope to see more open world invasions like Besieged or Campaign (the Garlean invasions are a good step in that direction, it's just the rewards kinda blow).
