interesting read.

Main point brought up more than once, it would require quite a bit of extra work to rewrite old interactions and possibly recode a fundamental system in multiple languages. It would not be a simple thing.

Oh! I hadn't seen anybody else talk about this so this makes me happy to read! But hmmm I guess it would take work. I just assumed that the code for such things would be an easy thing to find/replace. I'm not a programmer so shows how well I know my coding haha. Maybe one day.

It would need a complete restructuring of how the game inserts gendered pronouns and more complicated lines - all the different variables like lass/lad and even entire sentences at times. You can't just fill in a simple list of which words you need to be addressed by. The game doesn't store them separately and insert when needed, but codes each line of variable text to check your character's gender and display text accordingly.

I can't remember the exact formatting but roughly it's something like: Hello, [if character gender=F, print "lass", else print "lad"]

Whereas to get customisable pronouns you'd need something like: Hello, [pronoun5] and somewhere else in the system a list recording the pronouns to be inserted in different situations.

I can understand why adding additional pronouns would be possibly more difficult than it seems (though I think it would be worth doing in the end, as most efforts for inclusion are), but perhaps the programmers could allow for a toggle that adjusts which of the big two pronouns a character uses at any one time.

I feel like that shouldn't be quite as difficult, since it would just involve essentially a binary switch, and might help some trans/non-binary/genderfluid/GNC people be able to create a character that they feel more comfortable with.

Oh definitely. I rather them fix Hrothgar/Viera, update the facial options for all races, than focus on that. It was just a small lil thing I thought wouldn't be too much.

Personally I don't think this should be added because it's not feasible to do at this point in the game's life. However....

I think something that you are not considering is that it gives players less choice about their identity.

First, players would be restricted to the list that the game provides them rather them being free to say their identity is whatever they want whenever they want.

Second, players may want to change their identity later on. Do they need to buy fantasia and redo character creation in order to do so?

Thirdly, players may have to make a choice at character creation that they are not yet comfortable making. It adds a needless tension to character creation. The choices are already hard enough.

If you want, you can just add your pronouns to your character's search comment. It's a simple solution that gives all players more freedom.

Another thing to consider is that no other players are interested in IRL identity for group content. They are interested in your ability to play, and presenting this information to them when there is no need to do so is a needless distraction.

Personally, I believe transgenderism is a mental illness. But, I do not believe that trans and other types should be treated unkind; everyone should be treated kind and be respected if they show themselves to be kind and respectable in turn. But, I am not in support in promoting these types of practices as if it were something healthy for people. It is not.

1. How is this LESS choice than the binary male/female options tied to your character gender as is?

2. If this was theoretically added, just make it editable at the aesthtician for simplicity's sake.

3. They could go with the default for their character gender in such a case, the same as it is now.

4. I mean sure yeah you can add them to your search info but this thread is more about how the game npcs treat you not other players.

5. Again this is more for how the npcs and story address the character not other players, so this is irrelevant.

You can make female characters pretty masculine with certain tank chest pieces and that one monk/drg top from PVP. And with Viera coming out you should be able to make a convincing woman that has male pronouns. I don't think there's any gear that adds breasts, though.

I don't know why your friend didn't make a male lala if they didn't want to be called 'lass'. Most of the time I can't even tell the difference between a male and female lala depending on what hair/gear they wear.
