On The Expansion of Gender and Race Locked Items.

I know this is an unpopular opinion on these forums, but SE should really craft more gender and race exclusive items. Why? Because it would make the differences in gender and race more rich and diverse and would offer a player a greater reason to pick one race over another. It would also give more weight to the gender/race choice of the player.

What do you mean, there's plenty of race exclusive items. Look at the number of hats that the Hrothgar and Viera can't display when they wear it.

At the same time, locking more items to race or genders means less possibilities with mix and matching different glam pieces. I personally feel that differences in races are sort of shallow to begin with when everything is just a different size of "human".

Hard pass and I'm not saying this just because I'm a viera. Even back in my miqo days I found myself frustrated that I can't wear certain pieces of gear purely because of the gender of my character. I have always hated restrictions like this. I don't even like that the current racial gear is race locked. And don't get me started on the hempen sets...ugh.

Also given how SE have treated viera and hrothgar...do you really want them to go even further down this road?

It's interesting to me that any time someone talks about making gender mean something more than it does (in this case, "richer and more diverse") it always means adding restrictions.

Men should have things that only men can wear. Women should have things that only women can wear. Why? What does that actually mean?

In real life, I can wear a dress today and a tuxedo tomorrow, why shouldn't my character have the same ability that I do? Why would that somehow dilute the importance of gender when we have a number of different races that have complicated gender dynamics anyway?

The Mi'qote aren't suddenly egalitarian just because I play my Hyur as essentially non-binary.

I don't think the gender/race combination of a character should really matter more than "I like this look."

Not to sound like I'm against it, but to be completely honest, how often do you see a male character unironically wearing female clothes? every time I see gender locking on clothes being brought up it basically just boils down to female characters tired of being locked into mini skirts, so the easiest solution is just to give pants to everyone /shrug

    *waves hand*

It's not my usual look, but I like a bit of androgyny sometimes.

To illuminate for the naysayers, the point of this angle is to get a better representation of race and clan lore in game via gear items. I.E. giving Xaela more steppe-esque gears. Raen more early modern eastern gear. Duskwights more subterranean styles gears, and the list goes on.

You can do that without restrictions. It would be great to introduce more apparel based on the various races of the realm, but there's no need to restrict it to said races. It's not uncommon for a Westerner to visit Japan and purchase a kimono, for example.
