Please nix the Thavnairian Onion requirement for Chocobo past 10

Thavnairian Onions are not easily obtainable, you cannot buy them from NPCs or anything and only three quests exist that gives you A Thavnairian Onion and the quests are not repeatable. Also, people charge an arm and a leg for them on the market board and you need 10 to max out your Chocobo. People charge 250,000 gil for A Thavnairian Onion, just one costs a quarter million gil and 10 are needed to cap your chocobo. Already checked all servers in my datacenter, you cannot get one for under a quarter million gil. I also looked at Thavnairian Onion seeds but don't bother, they are more expensive than the onions themselves, you might as well just buy the onions.

This needs to change, a lot of people cannot afford to spend 2.5 million gil on Thavnairian Onions. As an item that is heavily needed in the game, and hardly any ways to obtain them other than growing them—which requires a house or an FC with a house, it drives the prices to unaffordable levels.

The Thavnairian Onion requirements either need to be removed—or at least give us more ways to obtain them, or make them purchasable from an NPC. The way things are now, only those who can afford mansions can afford Thavnairian Onions.

The price for thavnairian onions on Ultros is usually barely above 100,000 gil.
Less than half what you claim. I know, because I sell them.
I can also tell you, with the same certainty, that the seeds are even cheaper and you can grow them in flower pots inside your private room/apartment if you do not have access to a proper garden where you can crossbreed them from scratch.

And while the corrected price of 1.2~ million gil still might seem like a lot right now, you need to consider at what frequency you will actually be using them.
1. you won't level up your chocobo 10 times in one day.
2. the market fluctuates, you can probably stock up when you see it dip below 100k.
3. It's a one-and-done kind of thing. After you have capped your bird, you will never need to spend gil on the bugger ever again. Small investment, really.

Having an R20 Chocobo... you only need 10 onions, and if you can coordinate the FC to feed all the chocobos hourly, you can also coordinate with them to get a gardener to grow the onions. It's what a prior one did, and a bunch of us got to R20 with our battle chickens.

The time it takes to level them without people feeding them stuff (and you can use any food, as they will only change their favorite based off of what YOU feed YOUR chocobo) is so long that you are probably looking at going through maybe an onion or two a month IF YOU ARE LUCKY, maybe a few more with a bunch of people being dedicated at feeding them. Chocobo food can be bought from the vath.

Past rank 10 it takes approximately a month per rank if you do the challenge log and feed twice a day (challenge log is 15% of a level per week, plus 100 kills worth of exp, and food with a clean stable is 0.75% of a level per feeding.) That's more than enough time to grow or earn money for another onion. And once you hit rank 20, you're done and never need another ever again.

If they can't afford it, it is because they have wasted their money on other stuff.
As you note yourself, you get a couple of Onions as quest rewards, so no need to buy 10 of them. 7 or 8 is what you need to buy.
Still a lot of money, but by the time you reach level 80 you should easily have that and more. Unless you throw away your money of course.

Demonstrably false. You can do everything* in game without ever unlocking the companion system. If you do unlock the companion you can choose to either fully max out one skill set(pick healing) and have a couple levels left over from your free onions for the other sets or you can use the 12 levels "given" to you and try to strike a balance that suits you.

*The obvious exception being "level up your chocobo as a combatant". And... im not sure if you can dye your chocobos feathers without unlocking companion. So just those two potential things.

250,000 gil? wow what server are you in? i sell onions and seeds from time to time as i have a garden on my house and i have never ever sold one onion for more than 150-180k
