... Mine was pretty boring...
Dude wouldn't even smile
On Topic: It's not a big issue Rokien... argue it all you want, but you have a choice to make one character, or more.
It's a game mate, stop worrying about things like this.
I don't really care what people do, I just want SE to come up with ways so unnecessary stuff doesn't happen.

As long as its not used for a scape goat to Buff up the servers, or cut out crossed storylines im fine with it. all content should be able to be experienced with one character, my guess is there going to use it to buff numbers.8 characters per world is typically the standard for almost every MMO. That is where the 8 probably comes from. Yoshi-P seems intent on bringing XIV to at least the standards of a modern MMO as he continues to build on the game.
Also, there is a chunk of "Altoholics" who love creating multiple characters.

8 is the number of the Lazy developer
i love slots....

Oh my god, no Rokien, bad, BAD.
Dont dictate why someone may or may not need 8, yes you can switch classes, but can you switch nation? can you switch grand company?
What about the role players, they like to make different characters, some are very serious about it, even so far as they may create scenerios where one of their character "dies" off, like in a story and they reroll, but they dont delete they just make a new one in a new slot incase they grow out of their RPing days or if their character has some spontanous recovery. Like someone casting raise on it =D
In the end, the reason for the player is not important, what is important is the judgement and perception, it is NORMAL to have multiple slots per account, people are USED to this model, weather Yoshi will admit it or not, that is a bit issue, so many people are turned away when they hear about the $3/char because they dont understand some mechanics, it is a pointless fee that did nothing, was greed, so just get rid of it, and scoop in a player who will be paying $13/month rather than turn one away playing 0/month.
Regardless, when the game was free, we had 8characters FOR FREE and did anyone go roll on all 8 making them into mains time to time and not dedicating to one? No! Everyone had a main...
So you need not worry.

Roki~~ I respect your opinion, but it's unfair to force it onto others. I happen to be someone who gets no enjoyment out of playing only one character. I role-play and enjoy multiple characters. There's no way I could choose only one race when I find a few of them really cool. I also like to hop on a male character sometimes. I find it's quieter. XD
I understand that you don't see a point in having multiple characters, but to someone like myself it's essential to enjoy the game. Please respect that. <3
SE just did people like me a great favour and I will more likely stay as a loyal customer for years to come because of it. I've been poor for years (last 10 years have really been bad luck), and I just couldn't afford this game easily as it was.
The ability to have more characters was already there if people wanted it. SE is just making things easier on us. Those who want multiple characters that badly would likely have had some anyways.
This may be true for yourself, but it's not fair to say about others. It's very far from the truth for me.
All of my characters have grown on me. I feel very attached to all of them. I love the stories I make up for them and their personalities. It's always exciting to go on adventures with them. I may progress more slowly than those with one character, but that's my business. I like to take it slow anyways. This game is too fast-paced and multiple characters gives me something to do all the time. I'm never bored.

But unlike you and a few others, Most people Troll with the other slots. Like it has been said "personalities and repoire has been built with the main chars most carry. Others tend to build multiple chars to troll the communitys, and speak thier actuall minds while hiding behind a false char. You are a minority of player that actually DOES play multiple chars without bad intentions.

The last info we got on retainers said two retainers per account and not per character. At least thats what i heared. Of course you will be able to add more with money.I hope SE doesn't over look all the exploits that can be done with 8 chars on a server. Inventory, community, retainers, etc...

Perhaps they're going to completely change the class/job system and make it more like Final Fantasy XI?
Lol.. I'm just going to point out that having an 'alt' is completely useless in a game like this.
'Alts' are where people make another character to play a different class, or do something different than their main character (not going to use the word 'experience' because I don't want to sound pretentious). In this case, the other reason you would make another character would be to look at a different race/gender/etc..
In Final Fantasy XIV one character can do anything except join multiple Grand Companies.. but then again why would you want to? I'm glad that even though your character can do anything, there are some things that create uniqueness.
