SE has made some pretty costly mistakes over the years, but when they find something that works they will milk that until it runs dry. Currently, FF XIV is their biggest cash cow. FF 7 is a close second since they've been milking that one for almost 25 years. lolThe sub question is kind of a moot point, in an age where most MMO's either launch free to play/buy to play or quickly end up that way, 14 has maintained a sub, SE have the numbers, if they thought they'd make more more money by dropping it, they would, they obviously feel they wouldn't and given the game continues to do well, they appear to be correct.

Look forward to many more, depending on how many parts it ends up being, I'm waiting for the "It's so big that it's now 3 separate games when we slot all the parts together."

Well...people REALLY like FF:VII
And the people have been asking for a Remake for....YEARS. And even before the remake, people keep playing FF:VII and its other games..
So they should milk it...it just makes sense XD

Oh, it is without a doubt the smart choice. Some people think it's overhyped and all of that but I disagree. It really was/is a solid game series (it basically is its own series at this point), spinoffs and all. When they announced the remake tears were shed.
