The second umbral calamity intrigues me, since I keep wondering what could have released the massive volcanic ash clouds that from which came the great lightning storm(s) that Rejoined the Twelfth shard into the Source. And of course, there's simply no data on the 1st and 5th calamities at all (or even the preceding Astral Eras).
Some real short notes from Encyclopedia Eorzea:
Events leading to the First Umbral Calamity are a big ol' ??? since so much history was lost. Songs and writings of ancient civilizations describe it as a "tempestuous time of uncontrolled creation overseen by a mercurial god or gods."
During the First Astral Era, humanity learned the basic sciences and civilizations thrived. Kingdoms were formed, but eventually the kings became greedy and the kingdoms started going to war, creating factories to mass produce weapons. Forests were destroyed, mountains were gutted for resources, and the skies blackened by forges. Eventually, a tipping point was reached and volcanoes covered the skies in black clouds as the Calamity of Lightning struck, levinbolts boiling lakes and destroying cities. People believed it was the fury of the gods and tried to escape into the mountains, but plague and pestilence wiped out most of humanity during the Second Umbral Calamity.
During the Second Astral Era, the survivors turned to prayer, vowing to not turn their back on the gods and cause another Calamity. With the rise of prayer, humanity also gained access to magic, and shamans and priests became incredibly powerful. Rather than the kingdoms of the First Astral Era, the Second Astral Era had plenty of theocracies and surprise, religious wars broke out. Eventually the sun grew large and baked the lands in a Calamity of Fire, though how or why isn't explained. Theologians figure it was the gods once again getting sick of humanity causing the Third Umbral Calamity.
During the Third Astral Era, the Allagan Empire rose to power. Xande conquered the Three Great Continents, made a pact with the Cloud of Darkness, killed Bahamut, later imprisoned the Elder Primal Bahamut to directly absorb fire-aspected aether from the sun, and planned to channel that aether through the Crystal Tower to tear open a massive gate to the Void. However, while the Crystal Tower was able to withstand all the energy, the land buckled causing the Calamity of Earth. Earthquakes buried the Allagan Empire during the Fourth Umbral Calamity, and their technology was lost for millennia with the Allagan Empire becoming a fairy tale.
During the Fourth Astral Era, the few survivors blamed the Calamity on man's lust for knowledge and a lot of written records were destroyed as people chose to only keep oral traditions. Various religions popped up and focused on book burning to keep the people simple and avoid the wrath of the gods, and the various religious leaders even created a new script that was taught only to clergy while peasants remained illiterate (said script eventually became modern Eorzean). As for what triggered the Calamity of Ice, it's unknown given the lack of writing. The Fourth Astral Era and the Fifth Umbral Calamity is one big Dark Age given all the illiteracy and book burning and stuff.
During the Fifth Astral Era, survivors of the previous Calamity praised the Twelve for their survival and eventually founded twelve city-states, each pledged to a different member of the pantheon. Wars broke out as they do, and soon there were only six city-states left, with three of the most prominent ones being Mhach, Amdapor, and Nym. The War of the Magi happened, and abuse of Black Magic and White Magic devastated the land (not to mention Diabolos who was summoned by Mhach), triggering a great flood and signalling the Calamity of Water. During the Sixth Umbral Calamity, Mhach tried to escape in their Void Ark, the Nymians took refuge in the mountains of La Noscea, and the survivors of Amdapor fled into the mountains of Gyr Abania.
So yeah, real short version there. There's a solid 14 pages of information covering the time from the First Astral Era to the start of the Sixth Astral Era.
