They're a good first housing investment while you're saving up/waiting for a house. You have a chance to explore all the interior items available in the game and practice with decorating so you can come up with a style you like plus store interior housing items you might have already acquired through quick ventures, seasonal events and other content.

If you and friends want to be able to share a house but can't get one, you can always all get apartments in the same apartment building (or you can do the same if you have multiple characters on the same world). A click on the door lets you move between rooms as if it's all one big house.

Apartments will never be the same as having a house but they are a decent substitute until you can get one.
Honestly I loved the idea of having my own space in game to decorate but never thought I needed a full house especially since I tend to play on my own outside of events and dungeons. So I started to look into apartments
