While I agree with you OP, my current understanding is that the elemental doesn't really have that much of an effect anyway.

Please flame me if this is not correct, or (not as desirable) correct me; for instance, does it really help with Ifrit fight?

Actually it does. Most mobs have multiple elements so isn't easly seen, but mobs strongly weak to an element get owned from adverse element. On ifrit fists of wind blow him away more than any blm, ice elemental get owned by fists of fire, eft get shitons of damage from thunder etc

You're right, but people should expect things to meet common conventions, after all that's where most mythology is founded.

I bet this is one of those things SE overlook in 2.0 lol. Not that it can't be fixed later, of course it can, but we have primals that are elemental based or at least seem to be so it would make sense to sort it out properly once and for all.
I think the elements in FFXIV were one of those "different for differences sake" things that plagued FFXIV form its very conception. Take this sequence of elements for example:
Yoshi P > Tanaka > Himself in a never ending cycle :P

In all honesty, if their code isn't spaghetti-tastic (which I'm starting to suspect it is), it would literally be a matter of switching two values around, which, minus the design deliberation time, could be done in a minipatch.

It wouldn't affect much, seeing as how Ifrit (and likely Garuda) isn't even affected by elemental weaknesses/resistances at the moment.
