Lyse's is an NPC cut similar to Minfilia's, Y'shtola's, Thancred's, etc. They're always gender locked with a few exceptions: Alisae/Alphinaud's which is totally not gender locked (outfit and hairstyles) and Aymeric's which is half gender locked because that set includes a free gender hairstyle but a gender locked outfit. But yeah, there is no evidence that they will gender lock these and in fact tons of evidence that they will not. They haven't actually released a gender locked hairstyle that wasn't tied to an NPC store outfit in years.

There has only ever been 1 gender locked contest hair and it was the male and female "grand prize" winners of the Ye Olde 2015 contest


The original contest was actually explicitly split into male entries and female entries, but every style after the grand prize winners wound up unisex. This newest contest was not split by gender so I think its a very safe bet that all styles that make it in will be unisex.

Tbh they are similar but your example is locked only to female Miqote. Seeing as I know they have no intentions of ever making racial locked hairstyles universal I think this is fine. It's not my style, but I know lots of people will rock this if it ever gets added to the game, and not only Miqote!

My mistake! I knew it was a locked style but I guess it's one of those locked styles shared between a few of the base game races. My point still stands - it's a style not available to more than half the races (and an entire gender) in XIV. I know people would argue that they should just unlock all the locked hairstyles instead of going to the trouble of adding a nearly identical hairstyle to the races that can't use this one, but the devs seem to have put their foots down on the subject of ever removing the game's admittedly few racial exclusives, even the ones that aren't really racial exclusives at all like this hairstyle that is available across 3 female races.

Anyway, it seems my opinion in general isn't popular but 24h later I really like most of these and I think they mostly do not resemble existing styles. I've been waiting for big buns, curly textures and feminine up-dos in XIV for a very long time so this selection is something I personally find pretty satisfying.
