It helps that the boss in question has no real tank busters and almost all of their damage is avoidable AoEs.

True. After the healer died, the other DPS and I eventually died from unavoidable damage, but the tank never fell below 60%. He was never in danger at all from dying. I just never seen anything like that before in an MMO where tanks can solo stuff like that.

But if both DDs and the healer were dead by the time the boss was at 70%....a solo tank would do 70% of the boss's HP in the time that a full party could have dealt at least 210% of the boss's HP, which means it would have been faster to reset the fight, and on the run back to the boss room, tell the healer how not to die to whatever killed them.

Oh it would've been way faster to reset the fight. But the fact that a player can solo multiplayer content like that is mind-boggling. The dungeon isn't that low-level either. It was a lvl 70 dungeon.

That doesn't mean it scales/synchs any tighter than a level 50 duty.
It just means the tank has more of their kit.

    Still though... that's pretty baller!

To add to the debacle, we are talking about dungeon boss encounters.

Which are weaker than trialsand normal raid. Which are weaker than extreme trials. Which are weaker than savage raids. Which are weaker than ultimate content.

Dungeons are very entry-level, especially patch dungeons, which have something accessible to make it easy to get some cheap gear together. Bosses are tuned enough to make it interesting but when it comes to where jobs are balanced, it's almost at the bottom of the totem pole of importance.

Actually tanks generally have much more sustain relative to the party at higher levels than otherwise. TBN, NF, etc., isn't around for low level stuff.

This has been happening with Tanks that rely on Regen, Self Heal, Shield* and Life Steal effects for survival as long as the RPG genre has existed (it became more noticeable with MMOs). As long as the average incoming damage is equal to or lower than a character's recovery capabilities the character would be immortal, but once the average incoming damage begins to exceed recovery the character starts dying and just dies quicker and quicker as incoming damage increases.

This was pretty noticeable early on in CoX with Regen builds as compared to Mitigation builds and it was also the reason for the changes to Warrior in 2.1.

*The status effect that absorbs damage until it breaks like TBN rather than the piece of equipment that reduces damage by blocking attacks.

This is nothing new. Welcome to Capstone Dungeons, where our gear vastly outscales the dungeon at max ilvl, so we are synced to the highest possible ilvl (ilvl 400 vs ilvl 270-290) as opposed to leveling dungeons where we aren't. The main reason why healers and tanks can stay alive and solo them is because of how gear works - higher ilvl gets increased defense stats + HP & damage stat. That means whenever our ilvl goes up, it's a 3fold increase - the Defense increases, the HP increases, and the potency of our heals & damage increase. Tanks have a decent amount of sustain with their self-heals, so while it could have proven a challenge at min ilvl, the stat boosts from all sources exponentially removes that difficulty as a whole. This is how capstone dungeons, or lv 50/60/70 dungeons is vastly easier to the point that everything can be handled by a competent tank/healer.

Level 80 is the current cap and not everyone has the highest gear available, but it's basically in the same boat if you think about it - Matoya's Relict being the most obvious example when it has an average ilvl of 470, drop ilvl 485 gear, but people basically queue into it with ilvl 500 - ilv530 at this point in the game. It's just that by level 80, we actually have vulnerability stacks so mechanics do actually matter to a certain extent.

It's the same thing as the Demon Wall in The Great Gubal Library. I've had groups die when I've tanked, and it's nothing to do with the fact I am good or not, I just didn't F up like the healer and two dps did, so I finished it. Super slowly.
I didn't enjoy it because of timeframe. Living to kill something is not OP at all considering the timeframe. The timeframe is the deterrence. If most dungeons could be solo'd as tanks most would still not do it because of that reason.

In summary, it is not OP for anyone, tanks included, if they follow mechanics and kill a boss. Especially if the attacks outside of mechanics are so minute that the damage to health is negligible.

Tanks aren't op. Dungeons just don't have enrage timers.
