    Are tanks currently too OP?

We just had a dark knight solo the last boss of The Drowned City of Skalla from 70%. I'm happy for the dude that was able to pull it off, but is it just me or does that seem a little bs that a single player was able to solo the last boss of a dungeon from 70%?

It's not tanks being too OP.
It's dungeons, and old content in general being extremely easy.

There was a WAR in HW who even soloed the last boss of Mhach.

    So that's not surprising.

Coupled with the fact they nerf the hp of dungeon enemies from past expansions, which in turn only makes stuff melt even faster. Though even when stormblood was current I solo'd the Mist Dragon at the end of the burn, twice, after my entire party died (as WAR). Dungeon content just hits too softly.

You can probably kill it as a healer, too.

Being able to kill something without dying doesn't necessarily mean it's OP. What takes a tank 10 yrs to solo could have been cleaned up by a proper party a lot faster and everyone can be done with the duty and on to something else.

You don't see an issue with someone soloing the last boss of a dungeon?

Usually, out of all the members of a dungeon party, the tank is in the least danger in a boss fight. Surviving as a DPS and healer is less about living or dying, and more about killing it quickly. I don't think this is necessarily an imbalance... I think if the party has more experienced players, they measure things a lot more on the output of damage and efficiency than something that only matters when the rest of the party is clearly still learning the game. We should balance jobs around players with enough knowledge to make informed decisions.

Yes, the DRK in my party was very knowledgeable about his class. Knowledgeable to the point where he didn't need 3 other party members to kill the last boss of a dungeon. Is soloing multiplayer content in an MMORPG desirable though?

Yes, being able to solo or part-solo bosses as tank in a MMO if you really know your class well is indeed desirable.

Tanks are generally seen as higher responsibility and less players use them in group content. Having a tank that feels like a juggernaut and can do amazing things if you master it, makes that role more desirable and gives more reason to play it a lot and learn it. You need some of those "glory moments" to live for in MMO's anyway. In the majority of cases, the average tank will just die so it doesn't really throw the overall balance out too much. If you feel it's "unfair", there's nothing stopping you rolling a tank.

The main issue is more that level cap dungeons (60/70/80) are way too easy and under-tuned. If anything, tanks could be a little more OP, have more depth to their rotation and the easier content could hit harder. A game where everyone is balanced to uselessness outside of anything that's strictly within the basics of their role and what they "should" do, feels dull to play and lacks moments of excitement or innovation.

This isn't new. A tank in my FC managed to basically solo most of that fight back when Skalla was new. Just a matter of player skill vs content difficulty.

Were we born to fight and die? Sacrificed for one huge lie?
    Are we heroes keeping peace?
    Or are we weapons?
Pointed at the enemy so someone else can claim a victory?

Dungeon bosses typically aren't that rough, damage wise. It's more about the mechanics. I've finished many-a-bosses solo on PLD, DNC, and SCH. The only difference being how long it took.

Disclaimer: With the DNC the boss was about 50% "tenderized"
