On Novice Networks and Inappropriate Discourse

It's for a good reason. The betterment of the game! We wouldn't have issues as seen discussed in this thread OR things like that (apparently) Aether notorious NN spammer. I just want to see this game flourish, and getting rid of mentorship, and the NN is a step to further achieving that goal.

While I regularly see off topic discussion in the NN I've also seen it largely, when given the opportunity, used for good and if anything the off topic just giving people a place to chat (which is why I said there is self-evident demand for a more free form group chat, over a linkshell which is more structured).

When someone asks a question it's /usually/ helpful answers, and many of them. Occasionally I've seen some disagreement, but of that it too is usually fine.

So of three groups- doing it's job, being an chat center, and causing issues- it largely does the first two in my experience.

Getting rid of the system entirely is not the answer. Are there some much needed changes that could be made though? Yes, of course. I'm all for making changes for the better.

For a long time within my server's (Siren) novice network I have noticed a disturbing trend of the chat devolving into inappropriate discourse in relation to what the game is rated. This coupled with the recent broader enforcement of the ToS has lead me to try and turn the chat when it becomes this to something more productive to what the chat is suppose to be, which is to say a chat trying to promote better play for newer players. However, this is usually met with derision by my fellow mentors, who continue to hide behind "Interactions not rated by the ESRB" and the like.

This, of course, related to the long term broader issue of novice network and unrelated discussion. I tend to take the road that unrelated discussion is fine as long as it is rating and ToS appropriate and that novice network is mostly working as intended. However, this mindset has allowed a more unseemly element to emerge, at least in Siren's novice network.

So I come to these forums to ask how we work on this, without the usual position of deleting the novice network and mentor system. How do we fix this?

My child, fear not, for section 3.3 is absolute. Report any violations you find and rest assured that they will be punished.

I think some posters have hit the nail on the head. That being that novice network needs stricter guidelines. I would purpose that these include tightening off topic discussions to something appropriate to a T rated game, and most definitely the immediate removal of any mentor that turns the discussion to adult topics such as what is being pulled from PF. Furthermore, I would also propose a changing of the current kicking system for a mentor. While currently you can be having a discussion perfectly within the bounds of ToS, but some "holier-than-thou" mentor can choose to silence you via kick. Perhaps, it strikes at some perceived inadequacies they find difficult to confront. Anyway I would propose to make the kicking of mentors a three strike endeavor. This would make it easier to state a point of view other mentors might gnash their teeth at without the fear of them abusing their kicking powers.

I'd prefer to see it unused than abused. I didn't sign up for a global chat.

A part of the problem is that there is no other global chat network for FFXIV, if there were then these people would have another outlet for their nonsense and the novice network would probably just be novice related chatter.

In the end people would have an easier time in NN if they just accepted NN as a general chat where questions can be answered.

Or maybe a better way of looking at it is a very large LS.
