    Switching Clients

I feel like this is a silly question that isn't even in the right forum, but here we go anyway.

I have been using Steam for FFXIV since I started playing. I am under the impression that Steam is somehow causing issues with my controller, so I would be willing to switch over to the Windows client just for the chance at solving the issue.

I have read that I would not be able to use my existing FFXIV character if I were to switch to the Windows client. Is that true?

Additional question; FFXIV also just stopped picking up my 360 wireless controller after nearly a year of using it. Gamepad is enabled too. How do I fix this?

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

What is the issue you are experiencing with the controller? Is the game not registering that a controller is being used? Does the same error occur if a different controller is being used?

Additionally, if the Steam version is registered to the SQUARE ENIX ID, the Windows client cannot be used. The Steam version of Final Fantasy XIV, must be launched directly from the Steam application.

    Not Square-Enix support, but...

If Steam is causing problems with your controller, it's actually possible to disable Steam's controller-remapping layer (which I would lay 99.9% odds is the cause of any controller-related woe tied to Steam). If you open the Steam 'Big Picture' mode and go to the configuration, you can enable/disable the Playstation controller mapping option and the Xbox controller mapping option.

When they're ON, what Steam does is actually eat the input from the controller, then export a new controller in its place. This allows you to do things like button remapping in the Steam controller interface; you press button A on the real controller, but you've remapped it in Steam to B, so the imaginary controller Steam presents to the system presses 'B' instead, or whatever.

Needless to say, if something goes wrong with controllers, it almost certainly happens in that layer.

Disabling the Playstation or Xbox remappings will make Steam stop grabbing those controllers, so whatever is looking for a controller gets the real one instead of Steam's remapped virtual copy; in most cases, that should fix your problem. (And no, I don't know why the controller remapping setting can -- at least so far as I know -- only be accessed from the settings screen in Big Picture mode.)

I aim to make my posts engaging and entertaining, even when you might not agree with me. And failing that, I'll just be very, VERY wordy.

Luckily, I haven't had the specific issue I made the thread for in a few days. I have a PS4 controller that I've used a few times for PC and I haven't had the issue with it. However, I do have what may be a separate issue regarding all controllers that I'm using for PC games (I only have Steam games at the moment.) Please bear with me, this feels a bit difficult for me to explain. Let's say I am running straight upwards with my character. If I move the analog stick very slightly to the right from that direction, my character will start walking instead, and continue running as soon as I move in a different direction. I have discovered that this issue only happens when moving in that exact direction.

Is it possible at all to be able to use my character on the Windows client if I've only ever used the Steam client? I would consider buying and switching to the Windows client if so.

I believe I have disabled everything regarding controllers on Steam. Not sure if that's what fixed the problem, but FFXIV has had no issue detecting my controller for the past few days. However, I still have the issue as I described in my above reply.

You will be able to use your character on any version, you will just need to buy another license code for each version you want to use

As for the walking issue, did you try calibrating it in windows? If you use the steam input then calibrate it on steam as well, it could be that the analogue stick is a little off or worn and when moving it to the corner it's sensors dont actually go all the way but come "in" a bit because of the angle, which means that the input is seen as nearer to the rest position of the analogue stick, and therefore not fully pushed, if that makes sense. I know steam input has a lot more flexibility when it comes to configuring controller deadzones and sensitivity curves in that regard so if it works try turning it on and fiddling in steam controller configuration to see if you can make the sensitivity curve less steep so that its at maximum when closer to the rest position.

Good afternoon and thank you for the reply.

CronoSabre, if the Steam version of Final Fantasy XIV is registered to the account the system will not accept the Windows code. The Steam and Windows versions of the game cannot registered on the same service account.

Just as owopeachy has suggested you may want to try recalibrating the controller. In addition please try uninstalling an reinstalling the drivers for the controller? Are you able to use an Xbox controller to see if the issue occurs?
