So far as I understand it the exptra phases etc aren't 'canon' and have no real story behind them. It's not like some WoW fights where only the mythic/hardest version gets closure on certain things, like Ragnaros fleeing on normal but being killed on hard, etc. These extra phases aren't things that actually happened story wise.

There is no narrative to these special phases, yes - I only mentioned them because I recall some complaints (oh wonder, complaints on this forum...) from people regarding Exdeath and Kefka transforming only in Savage and them missing out on these second phases.
Storywise its really nothing more than a tiny detail that has no narrative, no story and no relevance to the story told in the NM.

Right. Post Ravana and Bismark, all EX and Savage content is essentially "non-canon". They are either exaggerated retellings by a bard or simulations that are deliberately harder to improve the WoL's skills, but they aren't real events. And pre-Ravana and Bismark, the EX trials did have "canon" stories, but those stories were universally just "Oh no, beast tribe summoned primal again but this time its stronger! Pls help!"

The danger room scenarios for the Warring Triad are real events. Unukalhai hands you a real tomestone that you really put into the Triad Control rooms, and then you really fight those simulations. They are akin to Omega's raids, but prior to them. The node you give the tomestones to always comments on the survival rating for the simulation, adding to the Allagan lore. They basically sacrificed hundreds of their own soldiers to perfect a few. Then they cloned those few.

It's not the deepest story ever, but it's there, and I far it prefer to the Minstrel's magical retellings/re-enactments.

What's kind of funny about the Savage Omega raids is that even though they aren't canon, NPCs still have unique dialogue in them. Notably, Nero.

Dont play at 4am and wonder why no one is running stuff.
