There's also a general obsession around 'true north' in this game for some reason, and people will go out of their way to overengineer strats around being able to use an absolute position.

Because like Canadane mentioned, "easy to explain" is a huge benefit, especially this early on. Left and right can be completely different places depending on where the boss is standing and as which way it's facing. North and south other the hand never change no matter what else is happening.

Now I agree that true north often ends up being inefficient in the end, but it can help a lot in the early days when everyone is learning and strats are still being worked out.
