I wonder if the dev team are aware of these performance issues. I'd like to have crisp framerate if possible on the native PS5 version. It really weird that on the lowest resolution there are some massive frame drops, even when there is barely anything going on in the zone.
I figure it's an issue that'd be low in priority for the devs since it's exclusive to a new platform that's still kinda hard for a lot of people to get their hands on. The best any of us can do is to report the issue here on the forums and/or doing a tech support ticket. That said, they did mention that they still really haven't been able to fully utilize the PS5's performance back at the Fanfest, so I imagine that'd be next on their list as we get into Endwalker.
EDIT: Actually, what I might do to at least give some more visibility to this is do a quick little comparison of the two versions' performance, just because I still have both versions saved on my PS5 and... well, may as well. I'm just gonna wait until it's closer to peak hours to do it.

Adding my name here with everyone else having frame issues. This has been going on since the "beta" and it's disappointing it's not being acknowledged at the least. The frame drops that randomly happens I could power through but I recently started Eureka and it's horrible in there.
Alrighty, so I did a little comparison video of The PS5 and PS4 versions of the game running on PS5, the PS5 version running at the "performance" mode. Thankfully Balmung's main city hubs are always crowded so it gives a pretty clear indication that the PS5 REALLY starts to get chuggy when there's a lot of models on screen all at once.

Also I know it's not like super precise science, but the clips were all captured within the same 10 minute period so they're consistent with player congestion.
I suspect that they feel that the performance is acceptable as is. Obviously, that's pure conjecture, but they have to playtest the same client we are playing on, and they surely see the same issues. The thing is, it's never unplayable, so I think they're more likely to just chalk it up to higher settings.I wonder if the dev team are aware of these performance issues. I long theorized that the PS4 could probably do better performance-wise if they used the lower LOD settings from PC (lower quality objects and shorter rendering distance), but they never gave that option, and instead kept the render distance at a higher setting and ran most of the game in the 30-50fps range.
On the flip side, they could be working on a performance fix as we speak, and they'll just sneak it into some patch notes down the road.
I will say, as someone who is forcing myself to use the PS5 version exclusively (the controller and sound features are way too nice), I think I'm becoming used to the FPS issues. Because while I definitely notice the drops, they don't stand out as much as they did before.
At least they let us use either version rather than locking us to only the PS5 version. Options are good.I suspect that they feel that the performance is acceptable as is. I love this game but the more I play of the PS5 version the more I consider upgrading my PC and playing there instead. I shouldn't have to do that, but playing with these issues is slowly breaking my resolve. The 1440p mode has, for me at least, only manifested problems in the open world sections. All dungeons, trials and alliance raids run flawlessly as far as I can tell. However, I've been playing a lot of BSF over the last day or so which is predictably ropey, but Castrum Lacus Litore... OMG! It is by far the worst performing zone I've been in. It was horrible and broke my heart tbh. It was so choppy I honestly don't want to play it again. I've got Delubrum Reginae to do today and I'm dreading it.
edit - Just got finished with Delubrium Reginae and other than getting my arse handed to me, the game ran beautifully.

Yes, but it's a compromise we shouldn't be having to make. Going back to PS4 version results in increased loading times, inferior audio quality (unless you turn off spacial audio stuff in the PS5 settings), a blurrier UI, and less controller features.
I'm glad we have the option, but I'm annoyed that we have to even consider the option.
Digital Foundry did a video about FFXIV versions and found the PS5 native version to be lacking.

PS5 version starts at around 28 minutes.
