I wouldn't mind them taking it a step further and, say, getting to choose which of the Scions helps you in a MSQ duty or something like that.

I could see this being more a thing 6.1 onwards, when the fate of the world isn't always at stake, they could do more stuff where it's more about us being an adventure and exploring, kind of like 4.1, keep it unvoiced and they could have us decided who we bring, obviously they'll still be need of the WoL, then have the Scion's convene when a threat emerges, then back to exploring and charting forgotten lands with your preferred companions.

Edit: Though it really all depends, though they have said they want to shift over to more one off stories as opposed to having the long drawn out narrative of Hydaelyn and Zodiark and the Ascians, we've kind of already had that with the Dragonsong War, The liberation of Doma and Ala Mhigo. So even without an overacting plot, the rigidity of the story may not change, we'll just have to wait and see.
