And that's not what I understand they meant. You get most of your items and gil back. You do get a refund.
MANTASTIC: I got 1017 problems, but playing FFXIV ain't one.
Llyren: Lala Tanks hit point density levels attract small planets

You do not get everything back when your plot is demolished :
Here is the lodestone page :
https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...3e7ccabefa9954
And i will quote :
Reclaiming Gil and Items
When an estate has been demolished, gil and certain furnishings will be placed in the care of the resident caretaker for a fixed period of time.
Redeemable from the Resident Caretaker
80% of the price paid for the estate grounds.
Indoor and outdoor furnishings that are not destroyed upon removal.
Not Redeemable from the Resident Caretaker
The construction permit required to build an estate.
Furnishings destroyed upon removal.
Housing exteriors.
Private chambers.
Company workshops and any registered airships in the workshop.
So , not a full refund.
Why would anyone need a refund for time they voluntarily chose to use to play a game?
No one needs a refund for any time spent decorating their virtual toy.

Likewise, no one need give up said virtual toy, which I believe is one of the points of multi home owners not wanting to give them up. I have 3, plus a sorta kinda 4th that I would happily give up if I had alternative options. I am basically drowning in gil, so for me to give up any houses, I need some incentive. (eg. Free trade to instanced with upgrades.. S in neighborhood gives me M instanced, or something)
People are upset that others have multiple homes (mostly obtained by legit means) and wish for the system to force these players to lose these homes. But simply issuing a refund is not fair.
Anyway, it’s all a moot point since SE is on record saying the current system is working as intended.

Not everything, but pretty dang close to everything. The only things that really get destroyed now are interior and exterior fixtures. A way around losing those is to simply replace them with cheap items from the housing vendors. Obviously that's a bit more of a problem if someone has been gone for a long time and cannot return, but it is still an option. You do not get everything back when your plot is demolished :

There are rules for retaining the toy. If someone doesn't follow those rules then yes, they should have to give it up.Likewise, no one need give up said virtual toy, which I believe is one of the points of multi home owners not wanting to give them up. I don't have an issue with the houses covered by the 4.2 grandfather clause. I do want to see houses taken away from those who have abused the FC system to purchase multiple houses after the 4.2 rules change.
Do you have a link to where a member of the development team has recently said the system is working exactly as intended? Every time the question comes up, someone drags out a screenshot of a GM conversation where the GM states that taking a house away from a player is outside of the scope of their job duties. That's not the same as working as intended.
You get most fixtures back now as well. Usually the only thing missing is any food item that had charges consumed. Not everything, but pretty dang close to everything.
