I'll be honest, haven't liked an Elder Scrolls game since Oblivion, and I haven't liked a Fallout game since New Vegas. The newer games in both series have been rather lackluster...and I'm not bringing ESO into this, its quality changes with the tides.

Oblivion was amazing. In my opinion, that was the last time they really truly made an effort to make an outstanding game. Skyrim was good, don't get me wrong, and the soundtrack was amazing, but it was definitely lacking in more than a few areas compared to its predecessor. Again, my opinion. Fallout 4 was okay too, but it definitely felt like they didn't try very hard with that one either.

I typically play such games without mods since I enjoy just picking a direction to run in so I can explore and see the sights as they were originally intended. I know there's mods that aren't jarring, but a lot are...uh...well either 'adult' in nature or just end up breaking my immersion. A lot like how some of the modern glamours added to FFXIV that sort of made the game feel completely different after a certain point.

They're also the sort of games that I prefer to sit down and play on a console since it's nicer to me to just curl up on the sofa and play them that way. For MMO's, though, I definitely prefer playing them on a PC.

I did enjoy Oblivion more than Skyrim but I like both. I just think a lot of the quest chains in Oblivion were deeper and more memorable overall.

What helped Oblivion's case was also that you started the game as a nobody, and that the storylines were actually good for the most part. Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood were the highlights of base Oblivion, along with the Shivering Isles expansion. 3 of the best storylines that game had, memorable to this day.

You stole an Elder Scroll, you killed everybody in the Dark Brotherhood by yourself, and you ended up becoming the new Sheogorath, all while being just a random mortal.

How the hell can you beat that?

I loved Oblivion. It was like Morrowind lite.

I really loved being able to create my own spells at the Mage's Guild.

Everything more memorable than Skyrim to me, because it feels far more alien. Far more like it's another world. No offense to Skyrim. I've played the heck out of it, enough to the point where I got to 2 shot the Ebony Warrior w/o sneak attacks (and also the weird Ancient/Legendary dragons or w/e). It's just that with shouts and dragons dominating everything, even if they are Elder Scrolls flavored, makes it seem almost generic by comparison.

Walking upon the invisible town, for which one mage is responsible.

Finding a Lich in the basement of the house you just bought relatively cheaply!

The Knights of the Nine with the Pelinal and Umaril lore.

The Mage's Guild joining quest where a teacher had been killing prospective mages by way of a ring enchanted to weigh 300 pounds only upon being picked up. Put it in the well. They go to get it, at his request, and drown.

Manimarco and the creation of Black Soul gems.

Dark Brotherhood having you kill the inmate who mocked you at the start of the game!

The Gladiatorial Arena first pitting you against other people. Then rigged matches to try and kill you. Then just monsters, because no person in their right mind wants to fight you anymore.

Dark Seducers make my heart DOKI DOKI

CHEESE FOR EVERYONE! No, scratch that, cheese for no one.

    Haskill.

I still remember the sheer sense of wonder I got when I entered the Shivering Isles. The house around you and Haskill turns into myriad moths or butterflies, and if it's night time, the sky there is a beautiful violet star scape. It really felt like walking into another reality.

At this rate we're all going to end up encouraging each other to do yet another playthrough of Oblivion.

I was already playing through Oblivion shortly before Endwalker, if I recall. I really do just play them all pretty often. I haven't bothered with Skyrim for awhile now though. I still don't have the Anniversary edition.

Funnily enough some of those mods are actually "lore friendly" if we go back and look at Daggerfall or Arena promotional images and stuff. People just go way overboard. I don't really know how anyone can play these games with some of the absolute ridiculous things I've seen. I prefer lore friendly ones, and things that fit seamlessly in the world - things that don't look out of place.

Say what you want about Skyrim, but there was at least one incredible highlight in it, namely the Azura's star quest. Getting the option to give a daedric prince the finger was great.

Oh yeah, Skyrim is great fun all around. I just found that my experience improved significantly when I discovered mods on PC. It's nice being able to make whatever kind of game you want. I don't think I could ever go back to playing it regularly.

I need to look up what mods they have. I'm afraid though that I would just end up modding it to be more like Oblivion, such as the map, gameplay, and adding in magic creation (why did they take that away!?).
