Amarant's a weird case of a jack-of-all-stats. He's decent at everything but not really great at any one thing. He's kinda the red mage of the game. Unfortunately he comes in so late that it's hard to catch him up without a lot of grinding. He does come in handy in one dungeon that blocks magic, though, since his skills don't count as magic.
It's a shame too, I really feel like they could have made him very good. Power Throw and Power Up (makes Chakra restore 40%) should have been gained much earlier, which would have made both his heals and Throw really good when it was needed most. Power Throw would need its cost heavily reduced since it's far too much (and you're already paying the price from throwing things). Add in an ability so he can gain MP back based on damage dealt, make Chakra ignore Zombie status (so it's good for healing allies who get that on them), give him a Provoke, and give him an ability that makes him take MP damage instead of HP damage (double digits instead of 4 digits though so it's not an instant loss of all MP). There, you've buffed his damage, his healing, and his tanking earlier, making him a solid choice for any party.
