Been on a kick of replaying the older Pokemon games via emulation as side games/wc games/waiting on the bath to fill games.

Turns out in Gen 1, Speed influences Critical Hit rate greatly, giving Pokemon like Primeape, Golbat, Charizard etc. really high crit rates. It also seemed like quad weakness wasn't a thing, but also that dual typing didn't always cancel super effectiveness vs. certain types. Did Gen 1 in Yellow version. Ending team wound up being:
Jolteon
Primeape
Charizard
Venusaur
Blastoise
Nidoqueen
All in the Mid high 40s with Primeape hitting level 51 after KOing Gary's last pokemon.

Just finished replaying Gen 2. My Gen 1 playthrough heavily biased me into wanting a Primeape again, so I dropped Silver halfway through even though it's my preferred version of the Gen, just so I didn't have to bother with figuring out emulated trading. Can only catch Mankey in Gold or Crystal, and I don't really like Crystal.
Team was
Primeape
Ampharos
Magmar
Feraligatr
Crobat
Sudowoodo

Levels going into the Elite Four were high 30s and extremely low 40s. Afterwards I blendered Kanto into oblivion, though Sabrina did give me a scare. Just rode naturally gained EV bonuses and type advantage all the way to the bank. The sheer rise in level going from any other Kanto gym leader to Blue's team though was rather steep imo. All his are like 54~58. After that, Mt. Silver opens up, and the path to Red is almost linear. I waltz'd up to Red with my whole team all at level 50. That climb is even steeper though. He's got a level 81 Pikachu, 73 Espeon, 77 Venusar, Charizard, and Blastoise. Then a level 75 Snorlax.

Had my Ampharos beat the ever loving hell out of his Pikachu. Then had it paralyze his Espeon. It died after that. Tried to finish off Espeon with Magmar, but Espeon one shot it. Ended Espeon with Crobat. Red sends out Snorlax, I send out Primeape. Cross Chop lands but doesn't crit, reduces Snorlax to slightly under half HP. Snorlax Body Slams Primeape, and OHKOs him. Send out Sudowoodo, and Red starts the whole Rest, Snore, Sleep Talk B.S. So I just keep slamming him with Rock Smash, lowering Snorlax's defense every other one. Sudowoodo gets low, I Hyper Potion. I must have pumped at least 7 Hyper Potions into Sudowoodo before Snorlax finally got defense low that a crit Rock Slide finished him off from 2/3rds full.

Venusaur's next. I manhandle him with Crobat. It's like Venusaur doesn't have 27 levels on me. Dings Crobat to 51. Blastoise comes out. I say fug it, and just settle into Confuse Ray -> Fly repeatedly. Blastoise misses Blizzard FOUR times, only one used during a Fly 1st turn. The other 3 were missed during Confuse Ray turns. Blastoise down in the red, finally lands Blizzard #5 to kill my Crobat. I also used this time to Max Revive my Ampharos, who I send out and Thunderpunch Blastoise to death. Blastoise gets a Surf off first, reducing Ampharos to 63 HP. Out comes Charizard.

Charizard flambés Ampharos, so I send out Sudowoodo again. Quad weakness to rocks, Rock Slide takes Charizard into the red. No luck on the Quick Claw proc, so Charizard kills Sudowoodo. Send out Feraligatr.

Charizard crits Flamethrower, and reduces Feraligatr from 171 to 19 HP. I had no other conscious pokemon, so watching the HP drop that rapidly, I thought I was baked. Nope. Surf kills Charizard, Red says, "......" Credits roll.
