MWR had an anime night and showed the Dark Tournament From Yu Yu Hakusho and out of the 10-11-ish people that ended up staying the lowest rank was 1st class petty officer(enlisted) and LT. Cmdr(Officer). Lower ranks showed up but they were so put off by the brass that they quickly left. I don't know if I should laugh or be ashamed.....

Put off how? Were they just intimidated by the higher brass being there?

My guess is intimidated. We kinda went from serving food, to sitting down talking about anime with them. It might be a little weird when that super strict BMC wants to talk to you about how Botan is best girl period.

This reminds me of my last year or so in the Navy. I was working in transient division, and we got a new Chief. Turned out he was really big on FFXIV, in spite of being in his 40s. I'd just gotten in trouble for blowing off a 1st Class, who I'd never met due to my job location, who was being about as informal as you could possibly be during a uniform, "inspection."

A few days after this new chief chewed me out, he couldn't resist, and called me into his office to talk about FFXIV. Heavensward was brand new at the time, and we jabber jawed about The Vault. Apparently he had trouble healing it! I couldn't believe it.

Its one of the most surreal things to me as look back at my career. When I got in back in the early 2000's it would be people meeting at the bar, out in town, or at the NCO club. Now its not strange to have people of different ranks meet up online to do stuff.

It use to be a little taboo when the little baby ensign showed up at the liberty center just because the seaman and 3rd classes are around there age.

The Vault WAS a bit challenging to heal back then, especially if you were a SCH or if the AST refused to do Diurnal Sect against Charibert. That dungeon separated the healers from the wannabes.

This actually reminds me of another story...

I had a guy in my unit who for about 2 years tried to get me to be his partner in 2v2 arena in WoW when he found out I mained as a healer and also loved PvP. So one Memorial Day 4 day weekend he convinced me to get back into the game. The day before I bought the game and I think an auto level 90 or 80... ( Chains of Pandera or whatever it was called was the latest expansion ) so after final formation we could just get right into it. We stop by the Shoppete or however it was spelled and pick up the 10 pack of Monster Energy. We get into 2v2s and once I found my flow again we got pretty heavy into the Arena fights. We finish our 10 pack by day 2 and we get another 10 pack ( BTW we EACH have a 10 pack...we aren't sharing this ) and continue with Arena fights.

Well 4 days later we are at first formation and we aren't looking too good...but hey why not add in a random drug screening. Guess who got picked? Yeah so I'm doing the test and my urine is like...green. "Renalt WTH is this? What is it? What did you do? Do I need to worry about this?" and I tell him I just had waaay too much Monster. He tells me after First Formation I could dip out and rest up and he will handle questions if anyone asks about me.

So...after that ordeal I decided that MAYBE I shouldn't have Monster anymore. Well I forgot that one of my other Sgts would take a can from my fridge as a bribe to just in/out on any room inspections. Now this guy was hard to pin down cause you could never tell if he was serious or not. Well room inspection day is up and he comes into my room and goes straight to the fridge, looks in, shuts the door, and is in my face. "Where's my Monster Renalt? Now I gotta do my job! Get down Renalt!" So I get in front lean and rest and he takes like 3 steps in the room, walks back to me, and tell me to recover. "Room looks great Renalt. I want my Monster. Nah I'm just kidding with ya Renalt...but no seriously I want a Monster. See ya at the Motor Pool."

I could never peg that guy.

Don't know why lower enlisted always felt uncomfortable around NCOs/COs. They are just like everyone else when out of uniform...( Most of them anyway. Some want to be addressed by rank at all times and no one likes them )

We'd have cook outs and whatnot on the weekends. Technically we weren't suppose to mingle with the COC but we also operated as "It hurts no one if we tell no one".

For example I have a few different laughs depending on the mood...and they found a particular laugh they couldn't get enough of but it only happens when I'm tickled. Apparently I sound like a mix of Elmo and Charles Lee Ray AKA Chucky. It came out during a trip to Louisiana when WAR-X ( I think that's how it was spelled ) was going on in which the Reserves had like a month of training exercises and the actually Enlisted were there for support. So at one point I think I was accidentally tickled with something and I laughed...and you would have thought time stopped because it got really quiet with everyone looking at me. I told them sorry and that it doesn't happen often cause I don't get tickled often...BIG MISTAKE.

So now for the remainder of the exercise I'm getting ambushed left and right so they can hear the laugh. It starts to spread to other companies. I actually had an LT seek me out cause he had to see for himself.

Then once back home...it spread to the rest of my company and some of the other companies. It was a weird 2 years from that point. Also no I was never offended and they stopped the moment I wanted it to stop.

Like I went to Keesler very early in my career and the zoomi..err Air Force cats would wear red and blue lanyard things and they would be like e-2 and e-3 which was some kind ranking in there tech school or something and think they could tell the navy and marines there what to do and I always got a kick out of telling them what they could do with there orders.

And then in Yoko you'd see some ships stick with there own rank unless they were over achievers, a certain type of person working for that 5.0, or were stationed on the Kitty Hawk (who did whatever they wanted to and use to get all of 7th fleet in trouble all the time). Before I met my wife I use to stick with the 3rd and 2nd classes because it was usually safe. There was enough trouble going that I didn't want that extra heat. Like yeah we did command stuff and cookouts but that was usually it. If your Chief walked into the bar, restaurant, pachinko parlor it was as bad as if shore patrol walked in and it was time to go. The Essex that was down in Sasebo fraternization got so bad with there MA's that they got investigated and caused everyone else to check themselves and that made me extra weary.

I can say that I personally didn't truly start hanging around Chief's and Officer until I got Frocked 1st class.
