It's just that without it the game does a poor job at communicating that visually and audibly and imo at least it makes the gameplay feel bad.

I think that when you visually actually see your weapon land on the enemy then you kinda end up expecting that to be reflected in the visuals and audio, when it's not it ends up feeling bad imo.
It's old, and it's a Bethesda game. That about sums it up, but the mechanics are there for a good reason. Your weapon isn't landing. Your character is like a gassed amateur boxer, trying to go up against a fresh pro - they aren't going to land hits. Even in hema a lot of it is about parrying and dodging blows. A good representation of this in action, is probably Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Yeah I am not exactly saying it's inherently a bad mechanic, just that the execution of it was bad or at least didn't age well ( imo ).
Then again I don't think it's only a matter of age, I don't like how it works in Pathfinder either.
Still love the game but I wish they made that aspect of it feel better.

There's a dodge animation but it's pretty lackluster and I think that if you're wearing heavy armor and get hit then you should hear it.
It makes sense for a Monk for example to be dodging attacks all the time when not getting hit, but if you're a Knight in full plate then your armor should be doing the heavy lifting there in terms of animation and audio.

Edit: Look at around 1:30 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLH0fl3lv_o
I think that's a pretty good way of going about it.
Bit too complex for Morrowind perhaps but just one example.
In Morrowind if someone was wearing heavy armor for example they could have metal on metal sound effects and if not have a small dodge animation or at least make it sound a bit more like dodging.

Sidenote, Morrowind is what made me despise Argonians.

Yeah, and like I said, there are probably mods that change this for people who want it. With a quick google search I have already found two mods that completely address these issues (both 'modernized' combat AND audio). One of the great things about the extensive modding community of ES games. Don't mod FFXIV though people, this isn't an endorsement of that!

    Example: https://youtu.be/nEX9zBOAn-A

Anyway, I am too wary of the moderation here to keep continuing. This may be the off-topic thread, but I always try to relate what I post to FFXIV.

Could you please expand on this? I've taken a bit of a break from 40K as my two armies haven't had their codices released yet and I got tired of being bent over every time I played. I don't read any of the Black Library books and haven't played a 40K video game since Dawn of War, so I've got no clue what sort of "self inflicted wounds" are eating away at the IP outside of the tabletop game.

They are basically ruining their own lore with really bad retcons (giving the Emperor a name, a wife and making her the reason the primarchs were spread through out the galaxy instead of the Chaos gods. Also Emps didn't make the space marines, instead it was some rando scientist). As for the table top, they just keep making it more expensive. They also killed their fan animation community for some reason with threat of DMCA.

It's always hilarious to me when a company does something like that, since it's essentially free advertisement.

Wait, what? They did what to the Emperor?! Seriously? That's insane. I did hear about the whole Dr. Astartes being the one who designed the SMs, but nothing at all about the rest. The last I heard was the Primarchs were still YOLOed by the Chaos Gods. All that's saaaaaaad. Good thing I don't play Imperium!

I hear you about the cost increase. I've got a decent pile of shame and basically refuse to spend my own money on it any longer. I'll get my new codices when they come out and may grab a new box or two when the Chaos stuff drops if there's anything interesting, but aside from that it's only birthdays and Christmases from now on. Hell, maybe not even then. The past two orders I've placed directly with GW have taken two months to arrive and I'm a bit salty about that.

    Fan animations....*cries in Astartes*

I am honestly not a big 40k fan, but I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE Age of Sigmar....
It doesn't feel like Warhammer to me at all.

The minis look great in terms of quality but it seriously looks more like Warcraft than Warhammer to me and it feels too clean.
Obviously they still put out adult content but I really do feel like they've been going in a more '' safe '' direction.
Even the more grotesque minis still have this weird clean look, I think they really want to try and '' appeal to a broad audience '' aka '' make it E-Everyone '' but are too scared to go all the way so they're in this bizarre middle-ground.

The lore is just rly dumb too the End Times was a complete disaster full of awful writing.

I think it's quite telling that the best Warhammer stuff haven't been their own stuff, the best Warhammer has been in recent memory imo is the Total War games.

Yeah 40k is being setup to go through an end times. It sucks, but GW also picks the worst option. People seem to be jumping ship to Battletech l, so I might have to look into that.
