Breath of Fire 2 was my favorite, but it also being my first of the series probably has a lot to do with it. Shame the franchise has just kinda quietly died. I'd be down for a bundle of them, though, especially since all of my PS1 memory cards are long dead.
I started with Breath of Fire 1 and beat almost all of it with only the first dragon transformation.
In Breath of Fire 2 it was a lot harder, and I got stuck when I was a kid shortly after getting the whale. Became determined and beat it eventually though.
Breath of Fire 3 I only ever played with my oldest brother, and I liked it a ton, but have more of a soft spot for the first two.
I don't like the way the art direction went, and whenever they released that god awful entry where you climb out of a JRPG vault tec bunker with a sickly winged Nina or whatever and some begoggled twink... yeah. Just didn't look at the series again.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore
Dragon Quarter had some really good ideas, but the way they made the game sadly did not help it. Imagine a Breath of Fire game in a large open world with the tactical gameplay of Dragon Quarter, but without the arbitrary timer. It could be a recipe for something incredible.

What a terrible day to have eyes.
