Fishing Question - How To Use Precision Hookset

I am a level 20 fisher. I have options on my hotbar to use "powerful hookset" and "precision hookset". I am unable to figure out how to use either one. I cast my hook and neither of these options light up. When I try to use them anyway, I get a message saying I cannot use them at this time.

At what time are you able to use them. Do these options every light up? When? What do I have to do to get them to light up?

You have to use Patience first. That will give you a 1 minute buff, and then you have to cast your lines. When you get a bite, then you can use either Precision or Powerful, depending if it is a light ! or a heavy !! bite.

Powerful and Precision Hookset only work while Patience is active. When using Patience the "escape" rate increases dramatically if you use the regular Hook ability so you have to use the two Hooksets instead. Precision for ! bites and Powerful for !! bites.

Also, during your 1 minute Patience buff, you can have (so far, I'm only a 42 Fisher) 2-3 cast attempts, depending on how long you get a bite each time. That's 200 GP for Patience, and 50 each per Hookset. So, while you you do regen some GP during fishing, it's good to have about 330 GP or so, just in case you can get in a third Hookset. You will regen enough after the first two that if you have enough time you will have enough for your third.


Also, your timer means you have that much time to Cast, not to Hookset. Meaning, if you can Cast while there is still time on the Patience buff, even if it runs out after your Cast, you will still have your buff until your next Hookset. Or you accidentally move or something and auto-put your pole away like I have done a few times.

To expand on the above. You typically don't need that much gp all the time it depends what your after.

If for example you are doing levequests or some of the Fisher quests and need specific fish and you know its a !! bite. Then you pretty much just hook any ! bites and conserve your gp.
Sometimes you can also take this a step further if you research bite times. Your particular fish may only bite after 9 seconds. So any !! Bites you get before that you can again just hook and save gp.

This can effectively allow you to use patience a whole lot more often. And can really increase the amount of hq fish you can catch of the ones you actually need..

It's even more usefull once you unlock patience 2 and start getting into collectables and scripts. as if you wanted to throw some watered cordials into the mix you can effectively keep patience 2 up almost constantly. pop patience 2 chug a watered cordial and go.. the hq watered share the same 2 minute recast as patience 2 so you can basically repeat forever.. or until the fishies sense something is amiss.

Can make a huge difference. in my case for example helped a lot going after allagan hunters for the skysteel tools fishing rod.
