In all seriousness, though. FFXIV is heavily story-driven. I would recommend that your friend go through the story normally. It helps with the connection to the game, the characters, everything happening as a whole in FFXIV. For the raid, we're expecting Lahabrea to play a big part in the endgame raid. His part and how it plays into the raid won't matter without doing the story. Other than 4 raid bosses that will get you maybe few weeks of good endgame progression, there won't be much care to the main raid of the xpac. Everything is deeply tied to story in this game, so it's probably best to have them do the story.
No matter how tied it is to the story some people still won't care and I'd only suggest for these to go through the story to learn how to play gradually (but it's still a real slog for stuff that can be learned in much less tedious manner by running instances in order after a boost or looking uo a guide)

Even dismissing the story connections, friend is still going to have to level/grind through the 6.0 story to get to 6.0 endgame. I mean. I guess technically they'd probably be saving some time/money by waiting, rather than joining now and still doing the story/level grind to get to 5.5 endgame.

Probably as people said, it’ll be when 6.0 comes out plus or minus a few patches.

For your friend that wants to skip, I would encourage playing the game through, but I also think no one should say “your fun is wrong”.

So, if he does genuinely feel lost, let him know about the story journal in the inns so he can watch/review as he likes.

Long enough from now, he should just buy the level 70 potions, if he's going to insist on ignoring everything and skipping straight to the endgame. At least 6 months til Endwalker, and it shouldn't take more than a week or two to go from 70 to 80 and be semi-reasonably geared to do stuff with you.

That said, this is the WRONG game for someone who wants to skip the story, or focus exclusively on raiding! I mean, that's fine if its what he wants, but there's enough time til new content, maybe give the actual story a go?

We likely won't see an update to the potions until the beginning of Endwalker, which is somewhere in September or October. We won't know until May, as they'll likely announce the expansion release during Fanfest.

My recommendation, assuming your friend isn't all that interested in story, is to simply get the two jump potions now and grind up to 80. It won't take that long, speaking from experience leveling a raid alt. With New Game+, they also can go back and revisit all the previous story content if they're ever keen on doing so.

That being said, I do suggest stressing to your friend this is very much not a raid focused game. They will run out of things to do very quickly if they're only interested in Savage. At the very least, I'd show off a variety of content to see if it might peak their interest.

That sprout status tells players that this player is new and to be more forgiving of mistakes.
This is actually incorrect, you keep your sprout status at that point if you have below a certain number of hours, even if you didn't use a skip (IIRC it's 100 hours).

Didn't realize that. I've removed the incorrect piece from my original post in case future readers see my reply but not yours.
