I'd been a firm advocate for years in regards to wanting to see many of FFXIV's systems updated to be more user friendly. I know quite a lot of people who didn't bother checking out the game in the first place due to how dated the official site and account registration happens to be.

As far as fantasia is concerned, I can definitely sympathise with how the system surrounding it is confusing. In other MMO's, if you want to change your character's appearance it's a much simpler and straight forward event.

Late-ish to the party, but I would recommend the following:

1) Make a new character in the character creator, save the appearance when satisfied. Load into the world and run around a few minutes, spam some emotes and make sure you're satisfied with the voice, etc.

1b) Alternatively, make a retainer and save its appearance. You can't "test" it though

2) In the main screen, when you go to re-edit your appearance, you will have the option to load this saved appearance.

3) Profit.

Also, SE suggested you post to the forums to get feedback from the player base, rather than them. They do not read the forums generally speaking. It's kinda like free tech-support for them. Though some issues, if big enough, might cause in-game changes.

Also, fun BTW: If you "accidentally" somehow go into the re-edit menu, you can close the entire game and keep the option to re-edit later (so don't hit the "check" or "x" to conclude your re-edit)

In my experience people tend to expect it to be the norm, but if anything when people do this it's them providing better service and do more than they need to. It doesn't mean those who don't are bad but just average. I think it's also harder for large businesses (ergo more expensive) to have something that is both scalable and personable due to the high volume of customers to deal with, so it often means that if the answer isn't something the customer likes, it ends up being more tough luck. I think it's more expensive to have something more personable. But it can mean certain policies end up with unhappy customers and they'll take the hit for it. Customer servicey people generally won't go against policy, sometimes they do and it gets past unnoticed, but my experience of working in a call centre is that its like big brother, your activity is heavily monitored and everything is recorded, because customer servicey people tend to hate their job and would rather give people what they want rather than deal with angry people.

I think SE have always gone for something painfully average, at least from customer service stories and my dealing with their service before.

Imagine kicking up this much of a fuss and having the game "soured" for you, because you messed up and missed out on a slightly different tail. You're your own enemy in this scenario, you're only souring the game for yourself.

My post wasn't intended for the masses; it was intended for Square-Enix.

It's a public forum. You posted in a place where players are allowed to comment.

If you just said "hey I messed up and I am upset SE won't help me" instead of "SE made a misleading ui" people here would be much more sympathetic to your issue. Everyone knows that everyone makes silly mistakes sometimes. However you're digging your heels in that you are not at fault. The fact that this isn't even your first time using a fantasia doesn't help your claim that SE are at fault.

My descriptions are entirely from memory, and I am not referring to any screenshots while recollecting the process. I do not recall seeing an "Appearance" button. Could this be a technical problem? There is no way to know.

It's there in big letters. You somehow didn't see it. That isn't the process of using a fantasia being misleading or incorrect, this is simply your own human error.

However, the handling of this matter has really soured the game for me, and scorched my image of the company.

I am not against SE helping you with your issue, it would be nice if they did and I would prefer if they did, however they are not obligated to help with something that is purely user error. This happens far more often than you think. Yes some other companies would help with your sort of issue, but it's not unusual to find others who do not. It sucks but that's how it is. My time as a manager in retail showed me how much after sales service can vary from company to company, even if they're based in the same country.

Here you'll mainly find fanboys who'll gladly lose 100$ to SE, but would behave like you if they lost 5$ to a random shop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The game should be able to detect if no change has been done to the character when using a fantasia, or show a summary of the changes before confirmation.

Would I be deceived into thinking clicking X means next? No. Would I call it notably insincere? No. Would I call it dishonest? No.
Having worked in retail, I am immediately reminded of the time a customer was given a complementary drink, whom accidently dropped it a few seconds later and DEMANDED compensation for this "outrage". Said it was our fault the cup was too slippery and his socks ruined.

On a tangent, thankyou for posting this. I've been wanting to alter the guardian deities for some of my characters and have heard conflicting information endlessly over whether or not you can edit it via Fantasia, and this indicates yes.

Maybe the people saying no were having trouble with the interface as well.
