The game should be able to detect if no change has been done to the character when using a fantasia, or show a summary of the changes before confirmation.
Hiya, I'm a whale. Nice to meet you.
The simple solution is to not have Square hold your hand through using Fantasia and to just look it up on Google if you're confused, or use common sense to know that the Appearance section in that menu would affect what your character looks like. If it wasn't there, then looking up on Google what it SHOULD look like would have strengthened their argument to staff as it would have been a bug issue and their fault for the Fantasia being wasted. Like, not doing any research and making assumptions that Square is just out to screw you over because you made a mistake is ridiculous and just passing the blame to someone else rather than being accountable for the fact that your assumptions about how it worked were wrong.

Generally speaking, businesses in the physical world are more than happy to rectify honest mistakes made by customers - especially if the systems in place are known to be needlessly antiquated. Businesses that operate largely online, however, have come to lean on a blanket 'tough luck' policy.

I'd been a firm advocate for years in regards to wanting to see many of FFXIV's systems updated to be more user friendly. I know quite a lot of people who didn't bother checking out the game in the first place due to how dated the official site and account registration happens to be.

As far as fantasia is concerned, I can definitely sympathise with how the system surrounding it is confusing. In other MMO's, if you want to change your character's appearance it's a much simpler and straight forward event.

In my experience people tend to expect it to be the norm, but if anything when people do this it's them providing better service and do more than they need to. It doesn't mean those who don't are bad but just average. I think it's also harder for large businesses (ergo more expensive) to have something that is both scalable and personable due to the high volume of customers to deal with, so it often means that if the answer isn't something the customer likes, it ends up being more tough luck. I think it's more expensive to have something more personable. But it can mean certain policies end up with unhappy customers and they'll take the hit for it. Customer servicey people generally won't go against policy, sometimes they do and it gets past unnoticed, but my experience of working in a call centre is that its like big brother, your activity is heavily monitored and everything is recorded, because customer servicey people tend to hate their job and would rather give people what they want rather than deal with angry people.

I think SE have always gone for something painfully average, at least from customer service stories and my dealing with their service before.

Square's websites and UIs are like straight from late 90s

I would disagree. This game's character creator is very, very simplistic in its design. I have never heard of anyone having trouble with the character creation screen until this thread, and I've been playing since ARR open beta. lol

Have you considered getting a name change fantasia instead and changing your name to Karen Theboomer?

I jest but let's be real, If I gave you a free cookie then you walked outside and dropped it in a dog turd would it really be up to me to replace it? I think not.

Late-ish to the party, but I would recommend the following:

    1) Make a new character in the character creator, save the appearance when satisfied. Load into the world and run around a few minutes, spam some emotes and make sure you're satisfied with the voice, etc.

1b) Alternatively, make a retainer and save its appearance. You can't "test" it though

    2) In the main screen, when you go to re-edit your appearance, you will have the option to load this saved appearance.

    3) Profit.

Also, SE suggested you post to the forums to get feedback from the player base, rather than them. They do not read the forums generally speaking. It's kinda like free tech-support for them. Though some issues, if big enough, might cause in-game changes.

Also, fun BTW: If you "accidentally" somehow go into the re-edit menu, you can close the entire game and keep the option to re-edit later (so don't hit the "check" or "x" to conclude your re-edit)

There did not used to be a fantasia reward from this quest when I started the game and instead the reward came from being subscribed for a certain amount of time. I was extremely careful before using it because I was aware one wrong click could waste it. I rehearsed my changes on the character creation screen first.

If I had wasted it, I'm not normally someone who buys off the shop but eventually I would have saved up enough if I really wanted it. We should be thankful we even have the freedom to change our appearance at all. We didn't used to.

If it's such a problem to buy it and your character is still relatively new, you could just make a new character and skip cut scenes up to where you were.

Also worth noting.. you can press the X on the bottom left and cancel out. It does not rob you of your Fantasia use and you can go back in and re-edit any time until you actually confirm your changes.. and thus use the Fantasia as it's intended to be used.
