The FF14 community doesn't know what it's got lol. Among MMOs outside of the community, FFXIV is seen as a group of generally nice folks.

Y'all hang around in the forums way too much if you think it's otherwise - my positive experiences here have more than triumphed over my negative experiences. And those arent even neutral-positive experiences, those are positive experiences - times where I didn't quite understand a mechanic in a level 50 dungeon and a fellow sprout helped me, the times where I've shouted or asked my FC or NN chat to shoot me a rez (some people going WAY out of their way to rez me) and they do so without hesitation, my first day roaming around and getting a random trade of 100k gil (which at the time, was INSANE to me, I'd been at 3k at the time). These are just cherry picked from my repertoire of awesome, amazing experiences I've had in this community.

On the flip side, my boyfriend and his mother have told me nothing but horror stories about the WoW community (And my friend about Everquest2, but I suppose the community there is about as dark as the game itself looks). And this isn't an isolated thing either! The amount of people I've seen complaining about the FFXIV community pales in comparison to the amount of people I've seen complaining about the WoW community from WITHIN the WoW community.

Oh yeah, it is definitely one of the nicer communities to deal with. I'd just be hesitant to put it up on a pedestal because I've seen things.

Oh definitely, I've seen some stuff even here on the forums. But even at that, the forum trolls here aren't nearly as horrible as the entirely serious players among other MMOs. Heck, even the thread on the front page of general right now, the one about the harassment in NN, it's one guy doing the griefing. I think Ralph was spot on in his assessment - SE knows that the only way to foster a pleasant-to-be-in community is to ensure that every little threat to that view is rectified, with a stricter-than-average attention paid to infractions against ToS, and a ToS that is vaguely worded enough that they can exercise discretion, but also specific enough that the general majority of the playerbase will never see the need to break a rule.
