Game wise, I'd disagree. FFXIV is still every bit as great as it was when it first came out. You get a few bad eggs, but over all people are kind and helpful with most things. I'd give it the same 8/10 I would have years ago. I think the only thing limiting the last 2 points is just the nature of PF where it allows people to be a little more needlessly selective of who they play with for newer trials and content. That's not a complaint though, that just makes sense.

Forum wise, I'd say it's definitely gone down. Outside people who are obvious trolls who are allowed to exist despite everyone pointing them out... the request / demands / complaints are getting kind of ... weird. Maybe it's because the game's endgame consists of more or less sitting around and glamoring, but I see a lot more requests or complaints on cosmetics then anything else anymore. I think that shows a bit more of a problem then the recent ERP thing which is what, a 2 week long episode of drama?

That said, Balmung went from RP heavy to just bizarre in the cities. Yeah ever since Au'ra came out you had your futa dragon girls everywhere, but now I literally get harassed by cat girl pimps trying to sell me boys in Uldah. That was new. I used to defend Balmung in having a solid community outside of the ERP stuff. Now? Nah they deserve every joke lol (joking when I say that before anyone gets upset)

Really? I don't like erp but I also don't try to stop it like some people here are. Planning on dropping off from this game after the moogle /Easter event.

Will definitely visit Balmug when data center travel is possible. I'm curious to see what it is all about

Speaking as a Balmungian RPer, that's pretty much Ul'dah, mostly around the Quicksands. After a while it started to have a reputation, I think it got one as a spot to pick up ERP and also it started picking up trolls. The joke often is "avoid the Quicksands" I didn't RP on WoW but I've heard it is compared to Goldshire. Some people still go there for regular RP, so maybe they can still get it there. But the last time I RP'd in the Quicksands was maybe 4 or 5 years ago and it wasn't so much an issue back then. Heck, I am surprised anybody manages to RP in there, it always looks ridiculously crowded. I also know to turn off shout chat in Ul'dah because it can be cancer. But fortunately its mostly kept to one place and is easily avoidable.

Outside of that scope, Balmung has a lot of great RP and great RP communities still, they've not died out and are still going strong. And we share with other servers on the data centre, mainly Mateus and Zalera. A lot of stuff gets advertised through the a calender, through Tumblr, Twitter and various Discords and sometimes the PF. There's also fellowships for it. Those are the places I tend to look for it.

Honestly Balmung is fine and has an amazing community attached to it, as long as you're not in Uldah's adventurer's guild. Thats it. Thats the only concentration of pure strange behavior. I can't stress that enough. It's just getting crazy in there though. That's kind of a good representation of the forums too when it comes to the subject. RP and ERP was always around. No one talked about it or cared much outside a random joke or two. But it just went out of control to now its in every server's PF for 18+. I think theres a nice solid grey area we can all happily live in between it being completely stamped out and this game turning into Second Life. It's not much to ask for but everyone just wants to keep pushing it to not okay levels.

You are funny. RPers aren't illegal. People who RP always RP. Hardcore raiders don't keep RPers in check (whatever that even means). But from what MPK wrote, totally sounds like those who are bored with no new Ultimate right now are partaking a little bit more in ERP. I found it amusing.

The last two pages here are only spam, no discussion, hence post deleted, no point in this.

There's one thing on top of the usual Forum community decay niche (which happens in any kind of gaming forums tbh), but here is a little worse because the forums engine itself is terrible. You can't track who replied to your posts and whatnot, making it extra difficult to keep track of (good) discussions, unless you keep a thread tab open and F5 it all day long.
