    Gukumatz' relationship to Ran'jit

Does anybody know exactly what Gukumatz is and why it serves Ran'jit? I used to think it was just a powerful beast Ran'jit had tamed and somehow made some sort of pact with that allowed Gukumatz to fuse with him. But after replaying through a good chunk of Shadowbringers up to the point during the battle between him and Thancred, I noticed Ran'jit mentioned something about Gukumatz being his blood or something. Could Gukumatz actually be a physical extension of Ran'jit, created directly from his own blood and then mastered control over many years of his life?

Any information anybody has on these two regarding their relationship ans such would be very much appreciated. xD

Gukumatz is classified as a "familiar," born of "forbidden foreign magicks, passed down from general to general." Ran'jit refers to its summoning and use as something to be mastered, and the hunt mark Huracan is Ran'jit's father's familiar, suggesting everyone has their own version. (Huracan should have dissolved when he died but he was corrupted by a sin eater and Huracan just...wandered away.)

I'd guess the process has more in common with summoner faeries than not, though it's probably not a 1:1 comparison.

Gukumatz is the Mayan deity that is a feathered serpent god. In their pantheon of gods, Gukumatz created humanity and was associated with wind and rain.

I'm assuming this is to link back to the Ronkan civilization, as it's major influence was the Mayan's civilization. The beast Ran'jit calls to his side is more like a serpent then a dragon too. I'm going to go out a limb here just assume this might mean that Ran'jit is descended from the lineage that ruled the great Ronkan empire and mastered the gifts that were bestowed to them?

It should also be noted that Gukumatz was also responsible for the sun rising and setting everyday and in Mayan mythology is also associated with mixing good and evil. Maybe he was just picked to further the theme of dark and light we saw in Shadowbringers.

How Gukumatz allows Ran'jit to change like he does, or why he gets a scythe looking weapon isn't a mystery I've solved.

Thank you Anonymoose and Kesey! All this information helps alot! If Gukumatz might be connected to Ronka I wonder if that's the reason why Ran'jit didn't summon it during the events in Ronka.

Huracan is also a Mayan god, actually one of three gods that includes Gukumatz and Kukulcan (Mayan equivalent of Quetzalcoatl) who all made the human race.

Seeing as Ran'jit's father is also associated with a Mayan god, I'd say that puts a pretty strong indication that Ran'jit's family was associated with the Ronkans.
