    Questions on Materia

I decided to add materia to my level 54 Samurai's weapon. It has two materia slots on it.

I took up Goldsmithing and raised it to level 19 so that I could complete the quest by F'hobas. I completed the quest and when I went to insert materia into my Samurai's weapon I couldn't. I believe I have to raise my goldsmithing skill to lvl 50 in order to do this.

If it is necessary to level up a disciple of the hand as I level up my Samurai in order to use materia, I say "nuts" to that. I wont use materia in my gear.

So I googled about the possibility of somehow using materia without using crafting skills and got various answers.

Is it possible to add materia to my gear without crafting skill? And if so, how do I do it.

    Thank you for your help.

You can do it by visiting any NPC named 'Materia Melder' in any of the major cities. They're usually found next to the Market Boards. It costs 2000 gil per materia, if I remember correctly.

The main benefit of being able to do it yourself is to skip the fee altogether but generally speaking, 2000 gil a pop is basically pocket change in this game.

Materia Medlers NPCs will meld your gear for a fee, or you can request melds from a crafter.

There's a materia melder in every (or almost every?) major city that can meld that materia to your gear for you. The one that comes to mind right away is in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks at the far end of the marketplace.

The current materia melding rule is you must have any crafting class at the equip level of the gear. So if you have a Lv54 weapon, regardless of whether it's made by BSM, CRP, or GSM, you just need any crafter at 54. This is a fairly recent (ShB era) change. It used to be you had to level the crafter that can make/repair the gear you want to meld.

This happens a lot with MMOs. It's important to restrict your search results to the past year whenever you search for anything related to the game--maybe even the past month or three months. After searching, click "Tools" under the search bar. Then change "Any time" to "Past year" or "Past month", or set a custom time period for 3-6 months.

May be worth keeping in mind, there's not a great deal of content at/around 54 that will see a great deal of benefit from materia. Generally, while leveling, you tend to cycle through new gear fairly quickly, and often get the most use out of melding onto level-cap gear (50/60/70/80)

That said, it's guaranteed to receive your materia back from your gear now (at least I assume you can still do that even without having the crafters leveled), so there's certainly no harm, either.

Yeah, as was said materia melders are in basically every city to do the work for you. You can also ask another player to do the melds for you. The advantage to player melding(either doing it yourself or getting another player to do it for you) is that most pieces of crafted gear can be over-melded. This allows you to put up to 5 pieces of materia in the equipment it works on, giving you a larger stat boost then would otherwise be possible. Three important notes: 1. NPCs can not overmeld at all, so this is only done either yourself or with the aid of a high level crafter. 2. Overmelding is generally only done to max level gear, because the stat boost from just getting higher level gear will be more significant then what you can get from squeezing a couple extra materia in. 3. Overmelding has a significant chance to fail(melding into the natural materia slots never fails by comparison), resulting in the loss of the materia in question(its not unheard of to burn hundreds of them in pursuit of a perfect meld so again this is usually reserved for stuff you wont replace for a long time).

The fee scales depending on the materia grade. Materia I is 100 gil if I remember correctly.

Tbh at level 54you dont need materia since gear gets replaced every few levels and the extra stats arent really needed when levelling.

Although you can probably do all content without materia, it's a good thing to do because it's free damage and shows you are trying to contribute the best you can.

It's not worth worrying about until level 80 because you're going to keep changing gear every few levels, and most of the time you sync down to a lower level in dungeons, which makes materia useless.
