Become a Botanist. The first thing Fufucha does is send you whacking at trees in North Shroud to get Latex.

But... I kind of wish that you could fish in Ul'dah and Ishgard, and in front yard ponds in residential areas. But sadly you cannot.

The lore is as a Botanist your finding mature plants and trees unlikely to flower or continue to grow, and which the main plant can survive without, which is why you never chop down anything.

Chopping down trees in Gridania was a bad idea for most of the setting's history which is why Botanists learned to do it this way. Despite the fact it is unlikely to literally turn you to stone anymore its still probably a good idea to avoid doing so unless you want the Wood Wailers to murder you.
