The issue with current retail FFXI it's hard to play catch up, very difficult to get into since you're gonna be soloing for a couple months.

I wouldn't say a couple months, even with a fresh account you can get to level cap in a few days easily if you know what you are doing and if you are new it will maybe take a week or so if follow one of the player made leveling guides. Experience is insane in xi at this point and systems like trusts (which unlock at level 5), FoV, GoV and records of eminence (which all unlock at level 1) makes not only leveling but also getting gearing all the way up to level cap and getting the basic areas unlocked, nothing. And you can always shout or go on reddit to ask for a ls, on less populated servers a single shout will almost always get you multiple pearls. After that its just switching between them to see who you mesh with the best. There is also a novice network now, but idk how it compares to xiv's.
If you are struggling to catch up and playing solo for your first couple months in ffxi, it's because you are not making any effort at all to be social and completely ignoring the plethora of guides that are out there to help.
I think also this is why they've put in Record of Eminence, they're a system to help you get kickstarted as they progress you through tasks to help you get caught up.I wouldn't say a couple months, even with a fresh account you can get to level cap in a few days easily if you know what you are doing and if you are new it will maybe take a week or so if follow one of the player made leveling guides. Also BG Wiki is great place as I think it's the most comprehensive and kept up-to-date wiki for the game, with headers at the top for all the information needed for endgame game stuff too so it's right there from the landing page as well as links to gear guides etc.
And there's up-to-date job guides on both BG Wiki and FFXIAH worth checking out.
