I'm a strong believer that the Mentor crown should be replaced with a watering can, since that would A) be consistent with the existing plant-based imagery for sprouts and flowers, B) not place mentors on such a pedestal, and C) imply that a mentor's job is to help new players.

A watering can would not change anything. The crown is a unique icon so thus it is sought. Changing it with a watering can is swapping it with just another unique icon that will be sought after. You will still get people becoming a mentor for all the wrong reasons. The meaning behind it would be cute but still does not solve any of the issues people have brought up. The watering can would still become a status symbol just due to the nature of what it is meant to represent.

It could be a poop emoji and it prob would still become a status symbol tied to some level of expectation.

I mean the mentor crown is more of a meme than a status symbol. When someone sees a person brandishing a mentor crown next to their name they're more inclined to associate them with "basement dwelling new player groomer" than "experienced player you can ask for advice."

Anyone who doesn't know about the negative stigma associated with mentors probably doesn't pay much attention to the XIV community, considering how much mentors get made fun of

Think the meme stems more from the mentor system in general I doubt changing the icon now would change that.

I'm only here to mention that the STF is practically a joke and 99% of their given punishments are on RMT black mage bots that already do chargebacks, and not people who actually try to cheat.

A reminder they didn't even care for PvP cheaters despite tons of reports until it showed up on JP and ONLY when it then went to twitter to spread.

So in actuality your idea would do nothing different.

Then there needs to be different people handling it. I remember your particular woes, and agree it needs to change. If it would be useless with the current task force, they need to be re-educated or repurposed. Some sort of checks need to be put on the mentor system.

The best way to fix the mentor system would to be to abolish it entirely.

The novice network is just a captive platform for lonely gr00mers on most servers, interspersed with ""advice"" from people who are almost always completely clueless about how the game actually works. Half the time it devolves into spamming 100+ people with Gaia-online tier asterisk Roleplay lmao.

Congratulations! You've just removed all Mentors from the game.
    Every. Single. One.

I could swallow 1 Mentor Roulette a week, not 20, I don't run 20 of ANY roulette in a given week.

As for raising the collectibles/commendation requirements.
Maybe the current goals are a little low, but it's entirely possible to be an endgame crafter and have made barely any collectibles. They're not required for crafting, only script turn ins, which are only required for a few niche items, and aren't at all difficult to do anyway.
Likewise, commendations don't really mean all that much, people can 'farm' them, and 3,000 is simply a needlessly long grind that isn't going to be representative of whether or not someone is a good mentor.

    This is simply gatekeeping.
By continuously increasing the requirements for Mentor status, you ensure that only the players who have been here the longest have a chance at being a Mentor. Except that you don't need to have played since ARR was current in order to be an expert at this game, or be helpful to newbies.
