Originally, I chose Menphina, because I thought picking the goddess of love was a good choice.

Later, after playing the game more, I adopted a Sharlayan backstory, which makes me wish I chose Thaliak.

Since your patron deity has absolutely no function, if I was Square I might just replace it with an "origin" choice. Which is basically what people currently use it for, anyway. It'd be awkward since everywhere you go you're treated as an outsider adventurer, though.

I chose to be a CNJ when I 1st played the game, so my starter City-State was Gridania. I chose Nophica since she was the patron deity of Gridania.

I also like how they used her image for the Twin Adder poster.

Althyk, the Keeper, the surveyor of change and god of space and time, commands the element of earth and is associated with the Sixth Umbral Moon (twelfth month). He is depicted as an austere emperor wielding a mythril greataxe. His symbol is the hourglass. He is the father of Azeyma and Menphina, and elder brother to Nymeia.

I played WAR as my main in FFXI, and so the idea of a god of space and time that wields an axe really struck me. Especially one described as being austere.

Indeed. I remember when it gave minor stats, but while running around Ishgard the other day I stopped for a moment to look at one of the statues of the Fury and started thinking about it and how I managed to choose one that I actually feel some affinity to before Heavensward even came out, even if it ultimately does nothing but provide a little bit of fluff.

It made me wonder if others chose their Guardians on a whim, or because something about the description resonated with them.

Rhalgr, always liked the lightning / electricity element when it comes to fantasy games. It also works since I favor melee DPS.

Althyk, the Keeper, taken up because Raranpa Sasanpa began worshipping him (as opposed to Nald'thal which was his family's patron) following being pulled out of his absolute stupor of drunkeness (gone into following the death of his family during the 7th umbral catastrophe), and having finally run to the absolute end of his family's funds, forced to take up a place in the gladiator ring to make ends meet. He had to change himself so he sees Althyk as the own most responsible for keeping him from dying in a gutter. Change or die.
