To be fair, what other next-gen MMOs are out right now?

Rift and DCUO are the only ones out right now that I'm aware of. People seem to like Rift quite a bit, thought whether it'll have staying power remains to be seen(Age of Conan I'm looking at you), and there seems to be a general panning of DCUO as being a pretty bland knockoff of City of Heroes/Villians(I'm just going off several review sites, podcasts, and forum posts though). I guess we could count LEGO Universe as well if we wanted, but that seems to be more reminiscent of Minecraft if anything.

The last contenders seem to be Guild Wars 2 and TERA, and from what I've seen, I'm banking on GW2. If there's anything ALL of us should have learned from FFXIV though, it's that it's best not to set expectations too high on anything until release.

Edit - Oh yeah, and SW: TOR, that may have a shot, although I won't be getting into it as I'm not the biggest Bioware fan and I think I've been burned out on Star Wars. Good luck to EA, though. Apparently it's the biggest investment they've put in a game ever.

Well TERA is out in Korean and has almost 200k sustaining playerbase last time I checked, its pay 2 play and out in 1 country lol so I think its doing pretty good, but it does follow some traditional mmo systems but ultimately it has a bucket load of content. And you can even play it in English if you manage to get a KSSN to make an account as people have translated the language file. So like a good percentage might be outside korean. I'd say that is pretty Successful. I cant wait to get playing again I absolutely loved beta.

Not only that but it has a reason to level up: Theres a lot of endgame, theres ultimate weapons and theres an expansion coming out in Summer. As well as a addon in April.

But now were a huge part of development, as you can see with their plans, they are actually listening, is that not a good thing?

Come on... 200k only? Pfft. That's niche. *

...At least that's what people said about FFXI, and it had 500k subscribers at one point.

    People and their numbers.

I've been trying to get some BETA access to it, but nothin' doing. Sucks 'cause I wanna give it a fair shot. **

    * = This post is sarcastic.

    ** = Except this part.

I don't know about you, but the two boxes I purchased to play cost me a total of $150 + tax. Just because they haven't started the recurring monthly payments doesn't mean the game is "free" by any means. So, I have just as much reason as anybody else who spent money to play a game that was released to market on 9/22/10 to judge it. If people's harsh opinions about a game they played offend you, well, that is your problem.

If I recall, at launch there were about, what, 500k ish players world wide. Now 6 months later we are down to something like 1/10 of that.. At this point it doesn't matter how much time and money SE has to throw at this game, they need to make those changes rather quickly if they want any hope of earning a good portion of that investment back.
200k and It is free, for who people using the buddy passes.

So what do I say to you in 3 years when the game is a success? A failure redeemed? lol, let me know what to say.

I dont know why everyone things the graphics are good, they're no better than general tech demos or ... simulations lol.

They are fancy but theres absolute no substance, there's no creativity. It feels lazy because of copy/paste and the minimal environment stationary. It doesnt feel thought out, and the graphics are just really high rest textures, and because everythigns copy/pasta its not hard to do that.

Any other game could "look as good" if it was bare minimum.

Cabal 2 uses CryEngine 3 so im excited to see how that turns out as their first trailer was Environments.

    And, if ur too lazy to scroll down;

The PlayStation 3 release will be delayed until we are confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the FINAL FANTASY name for users on all supported platforms. We offer our sincerest apologies to any fans anticipating the PlayStation 3 release, and humbly ask for your continued patience and understanding as both the development team and Square Enix as a whole strive towards making FINAL FANTASY XIV a truly enjoyable and unforgettable adventure.

First of all, I would like to apologize for our inability to fully satisfy our users with the initial release of FINAL FANTASY XIV. I take full responsibility for the game's current situation, and have therefore made the decision to step down from my role as producer. A number of concerns that have been voiced by users, such as the design of the user interface, availability of tutorials and game content, and battle system functionality, represent key issues that must be addressed. While improvements are already well underway in many areas, we were unfortunately not able to incorporate player feedback as quickly as we would have liked. We are aware, however, that in many cases, addressing these issues will call for a reworking of game elements. As these changes are our first priority, they will be commanding our full attention and efforts. It is to that end that we have put a new organizational structure into place for the development team. Under this new system, FINAL FANTASY XIV will see changes and additions in line with the desires and expectations of players. Though no longer producer, I will be continuing to support the development team in other capacities, and personally hope that you will continue your adventures in the realm of Eorzea.
