Yoshida said in the showcase she wasn't going to change jobs, just attire, he also said that Estinien is the first Trust using the Dragoon job and said Zenos' sudden change in appearance has a "very good reason behind it." Specifically pointing out his armor —which he used to wear Legatus armor, akin to fending gear as a Samurai— looked a bit "lighter" than before. New job is confirmed to be using maiming gear, which is, in fact, lighter than the Legatus armor he had on previously.

I don't really get how people could think anyone but Zenos could be the new job when they haven't been subtle about it at all—he literally broke his weapon and said he needed to find something new. At this point its so in our faces that I don't really know how anyone can question it at this point? Sure, he could be rocking an NPC only job, but between the secrecy behind it and all the subtle hints, I think the likelihood of Zenos not being the new melee is exceedingly low.

I read the reddit post and the quote that it wants to highlight, but it doesn't include the original context that the quote is answering. Was he directly answering a question about gear, or is someone taking something he said and interpreting it as "new job will wear maiming gear"? Because the quote itself doesn't say anything about gear.

It's the best they could do with the interpretation, and the direct quote is there, it's just in Japanese. :\

If it's not the correct assumption, someone better get on the horn to JP SE, because that post and a ton of gaming sites talking about it have it also that way. Reading the interpretation, it tells me that the melee DPS is in fact using the maiming gear because it makes the most sense without re-inventing the wheel so to speak. It's the only class that doesn't share its armor set and to put a new melee DPS in it does make a decent sort of sense.

It's also the only melee thats one the slower side of things (compared to the others) so adding another that plays like it with its armor makes the most sense

The quote only says that they chose to make the new job a melee DD. It says nothing about gear. I checked the linked interview since the reddit post failed to include a translation of the aforementioned context. The header above the quote in the original is simply "About the new 6.0 close-range job".

While I too believe that the job will surely be wearing maiming gear, it is an overreach to say "maiming gear confirmed". If we're talking about uniqueness of gear, as Bright-Flower points out, DRG is not alone in that regard. NIN also has its own gear type.

The quoted quote doesn't mention gear at all but mentions DRG's "special position". This could easily be interpreted to mean that the new DD will be a slow melee DD, as DRG is the only melee DD with a 2.5s GCD. The thing that differentiates DRG from the other melee DDs is that the rest are hasted to 2.00s (MNK), 2.125s (NIN), and 2.175s (SAM).

The reference to "slots" is in fact referring to gear slots. So yes, he is outright saying it wears maiming gear. DRG's interesting position is that it wears heavier armor than the other melee; this comment is in reference to a previous statement of his made sometime around when SAM was revealed (don't ask for a source, I cba).



They did this before with him, when he was introduced at a fanfest wielding three Katana during Stormblood's initial reveal before the job was teased in 5.5 with Gosetsu and then later when they revealed the Othardian part of Stormblood.

Zenos isn't the face of a samurai among NPCs, though. Gosetsu is the face of the samurai. Zenos might use the weapon but he doesn't walk the walk and talk the talk like Gosetsu does.
