People already circumvent the fixed prices of houses through private sales. And if we add hardly affordable prices to everything that is scarce, the only happy customers will be gold sellers and speculators.
I want the hair. But I'd never buy it on the marketboard, since even if I had infinite gil, I'd never spend the 8-10 million gil it goes for since I'm not going to make someone rich since they got lucky on RNG. If I get one... Yay, new hairstyle. Otherwise, I'm cool without it.
I'm with you on that, as much as I would love having the hairstyle paying around 9.3mil (on my server) is a bit excessive, nothing worse than leaving it all down to RNG just to even get a chance on getting the hairstyle.I want the hair. It really is a shame we can't exchange coins for the hairstyle but I guess they want to make it (exclusive) to make it drop from the dungeon, even then there is a limit to how many times you would want to repeat the same dungeon just for a "chance" on getting said item.
I might just hold off on getting the hairstyle until it goes for a lower price, if & when that will happen remains to be seen considering the rate it's going at the moment.
The thing is, SE is in control of that supply versus demand. They've set the drop rates so those items are only coming onto the market at a trickle, and cost much more than, say, the also highly sought after items from the Ishgardian Restoration.Inflation has nothing to do with it, nor should you be basing any such claims off the price of a house. Player controlled pricing and game controlled pricing work in different ways.
It's a supply versus demand issue. We see this happen with every new item introduced to the game that can be sold on the marketboard. Sellers set initial prices high based on expected rarity and demand. Prices then settle as buyers show what they're willing to pay.
This item is not Night Pegasus whistle rarity. It's Gyr Abanian Plait rarity. We're going to see the same price pattern emerge, with it fluctuating depending on how many players are actively farming content for their relics.
And inflation definitely has a lot to do with it, because older players increasingly are sitting on sufficiently huge amounts of gil that they will pay that much for a hairstyle - but it's miles out of reach for a new player. The higher prices are set, the longer a new player is unable to get it.
As I said before, putting this degree of rarity and prestige on hairstyles feels different to glamour or mounts. Those are desirable but you regularly switch outfits so it would just be one of many, but a hairstyle is visible on your character 100% of the time so it feels more central to their design and important for people to be able to use the style that they want.
Here to echo what everyone has said so far, and that after so many runs I still haven't gotten my hands on it and it's exhausting.
I could understand the mount being a rare drop, or a minion, but something as trivial as a hairstyle shouldn't be THIS hard to get.
Since there's no alternative way to buy it with Coins, you have to get lucky. There's nothing "prestigious" about getting lucky. If there was at least a price of 500 Silver Coins, you could go in hoping that you'll get it to drop, but you'd also know you're working toward a clear goal with a fixed number of runs. When I go in there now, part of me feels like I'm wasting my time because if it hasn't dropped in 40+ runs it might be another 40 till it does.
I remember when the Samsonian Locks came out in PotD and IIRC it was the first time SE had a hairstyle as an RNG drop and ZeplaHQ made a rant video about it, and she sums RNG systems pretty well; with RNG there's always going to be someone that doesn't get it, no matter how many times you try. You can run it for years every single day and you'll never get it. And unless you farmed until your eyes bled during the window where content was populated, people will move onto the new content when a new expansion hits and your organic chances hit an astronomical low ON TOP of the RNG.
I suspect we'll see an increase in the drop rate for 5.5 but I could be wrong.
Paid 9 million for it. That was all I had. Got tired of running the raid
Welcome to the club! If you paid 9 million, it looks like the price is going back up/settling at that number. Unfortunate, probably means when this item becomes more rare this hairstyle will probably be priced VERY high (not like it isn't already!).
I suspect even if they increase the drop rate in the future, the damage has already been done. Due to the nature and implementation of DR, plus a fickle playerbase, this item will always be priced high and very rare.

The only thing DR is for is getting the armor so that you can upgrade it to the 515 version from doing SDR. I'm actually kind of wondering if Savage DR is doing worse than Diadem 1.0.
I also joined the 'gave up and bought it' club.
The price has been stagnant for weeks, and DR is getting worse and slower. I was worried the price would start going up more.
