Like I gave you the benefit of a doubt with my response, but with that extreme strawmanning its obvious you are a troll. You haven’t been paying attention. There’sa storyline ongoing right now.
Even if you agree XI should shut down just to be contrarian, FFXIV should be shut down because it is less popular than wow, and wow should be shut down because it’s less popular than fortnite. All console and PC gaming should be shut down in favor of mobile gaming.
Niches are important. Just because content is good with metrics doesn’t mean players enjoy that content. Just because content is broadly unpopular doesn’t mean players don’t love it. The pvp (not roulette cheese) community in this game is a good example of this.
The single easiest way to design all sense of fun out of a game is to only push popular. That’s what pushed garrisons in wow, and it’s what pushes the most boring roulettes in ffxiv. Not fun, not good gameplay.
I think the sanctuary will be a big part of the expansion for a lot of players.
Ultimates... honestly I guess if it doesn’t take up too much development time it doesn’t really hurt, but it’s nowhere near as important as most content in the game.
As I said before the only people who do it are a small number of raiding statics and people who literally pay for clears. Removing this content would actually help fight RMT and it’s not like too many people would miss it.
It's not much of a strawman since XI is getting storyline content even now.
XI isn't popular, but that doesn't mean its community doesn't count on Square to keep things fresh. The same goes for the players that enjoy Ultimate, PVP, or other things Square supports.
Metrics are overrated. If anything, content too popular with players should be fought against in a game this diverse; popularity, especially in mindless content, is a sign players are happily sacrificing time with something they could enjoy for a lazier -- and not as engaging -- "safe" alternative.
Main Scenario Roulette is a perfect example of players failing to account for opportunity cost and ultimately limiting what they get out of the game because they'd rather take the path of least resistance. The popularity of MSQ Roulette certainly doesn't mean we need another Praetorium.
We've gotten nothing on this since Yoshi mentioned it in Shadowbringers interviews. What's a few more months.

Wow dude you're 1 person.First, I am sorry the content you enjoy has been cut but to say that no one enjoy the story is a blatant lie! I love the story and rarely skip a cutscene and I also happen to know a lot of people do. Stop whining that your content has been cut and move on, there's a bloody pandemic outside.
Now lets take a look at a REAL streamer like Asmongold who was tens of thousands to hundred of thousands of viewers at any given time.
Do you you think they care about the story? No. They only care about high end content like the rest of us normal people.
People like Asmongold and world progression raiders are fun to watch because of how skillful they are. Playing through normal level content is just boring and it doesn't get views. I mean how is it fun not being able to die?
WoW streams are fun because of all the high skill the game requires and the fun personality from people like Asmongold.
Too bad ffxiv doesn't have an Asmongold equivalent. Best we have is arthars and xenos, but we know what happens to them if they try to call out under performing players.
I'm afraid it gets the Ishgard treatment though, bland and ultra-repetitive.
"Slow play" in itself is a genre, and it may not seem apparent, but it involves a lot of game design focus. Take a game like stardew valley, it is filled with variations of similar content and gimmicks so that each time you play, you get a satisfying feeling.
I don't see FFXIV giving a lot of time and resources to that type of content without shaving some off what is on the side. Could be ultimate, could be other dungeons...
that isn't because people don't care about the story, it's because with story people prefer to play it through themselves rather than watch someone else do it.No one even cares about the story, I personally skip all the cutscenes and I know many others who does the same. The only thing that matters in this game is the battle content.
Edit: This is clearly the case in streaming platforms. Ultimate fights draws tens of thousands of viewers while people who stream the story only get like single digit viewers if any!
And there it is, Asmongold! I knew you would bring him up. Are his watchers FF14 players? no? then of course they don't care about the story for a game they don't even play. Most 14 players enjoy the story, like I said earlier Shadowbringers was widely praised as the best expansion because of the story. Emet-Selch even got 11th place on the best FF characters list. I love the story and characters of this game and most of my friends do as well, you cannot speak for everyone.Wow dude you're 1 person.

It's almost comical watching how flawed and narrow-minded the logic is here. You state that nobody cares about the story, yet you do the selfsame thing with other content on several occasions and with the story itself, yet when someone calls you out on this, or uses that selfsame logic against you... Besides, the reason why the story is not such a compelling thing to watch isn't due to something as vacuum logic "It isn't popular", it's mostly due to the accessibility of the content, and the spoiler implications of not doing the story first hand. Why watch someone else do the story when I can participate in and do the story first hand? You plan to argue this point? Probably not, at least not in any substantiating degree.Wow dude you're 1 person.

Stop trying to create this pejorative narrative of all casual content, whilst simultaneously trying to fit everyone else who raids into this selfsame narrative. It doesn't make sense, at all.
I'm just spitballing here, and do forgive me for doing so, but does this not have something to do with being in breach of the ToS? Just a massive piece of speculation here (/s)

I have only read the very first few pages but please don't troll or provoke people just because you're upset. I'm upset too. I really wanted this ultimate to come out. But making the stereotype of toxic hardcore elitist true only makes people unsympathetic to your cause and propagtes bad feelings.
But people who are on the opposite side of the spectrum where you're cheering this move on are just as bad as the TC.
We all deserve more because of what's been going on in this expansion. They can blame covid but I think it's just a convenient excuse at this point. I had the very serious side effects of covid that placed me in the ICU. I don't believe it would cause six months of delays. Look at every other game company in the world. NA based, EU based, JP based, no other game company in the world has blamed covid for as long as SE. Or been impacted as hard as SE, and some of them make MMO'S too. Do you know of any game comapny that's been blaming covid as long as SE has? Hell Blizzard launched an expansion and will soon release their first huge content update to that expansion. It's just a convenient out IMO that plays on the sympathy of people. They're probably working hard on 16 and it's public knowledge that the 14 team is helping with that. If it's not that than it's just pure incompetence and mismanagement.
As someone who dips their toes into a bit of everything, content this expansion has been severely lacking and more grind oriented than past expansions. It's been very disappointing. Due to bad game design, Final Fantasy 16, covid, or something else entirely, we all have our suspicions and thoughts on the matter. I just sincerely hope the next expansion is better in all aspects. That it has an amazing launch like shadowbringers but more importantly an amazing follow up. Because that's where shadowbringers falls short IMO.
