I'm so mad about this that I ended up making an account for the forums here. I have soooo many Xbox only followers on Twitter who have been wanting to play this game for the longest time. They were extremely bummed when it wasn't announced with End Walker, and are furious at today's news. I don't blame them. In 2019 SE told Phil Spencer (Head of Xbox) that FFXIV was coming to the platform...Which was a lie apparently. SE is just skipping over an entire community of players right now for some weird reason. If they ported it Xbox they could help grow our community plus they would make money off Xbox people buying the game, expansions, subs, and in the cash shop! It makes no sense to me not to bring them into our community.

It was an interview with IGN or GameSpot with Square and Xbox reps during XO2019 we were told all FF titles were being added and 14 later in the year of 2020(pre covid)

I’m a little surprised to see this given that apparently Xbox rewrote a lot of internal policies specifically for this game. I know that Xbox was making a lot of unusual demands in the beginning (chat, their own servers, the paywall) but it seems that even if those issues are solved now they just don’t have the manpower to expand to another platform right now.

At the end of the day I’m sure this was a hard decision for Yoship to make, but I’m glad he’s looking out for the team and fans alike. Square might have the money, but the FFXIV doesn’t have the manpower or time, it seems. Also I imagine trying to do this in time for the expansion with most of the staff being WFH due to Covid would probably be a nightmare. The game would suffer for it.

It’s not ideal, but I don’t think this is an excuse as much as a valid reason. Sorry though, OP. That sucks.

Not wanting to step on your sympathies because I appreciate it. But I am a fan, so to me it dosnt feel like they are looking out for fans. Like I said I'm very frustrated that Xbox fans are being treated like second class citizens. So it feels very disheartening.

the thing is that Ms was never going to change the policy, but when they planed to srap the 12 month sub and make the 6 month cost the same as the 12 month just to force people to sub for the gamepass peopel got mad. They only change the policy because people where pissed and its only for free 2 play games and last time i check Ff xiv is not Fp2

Japanese game developer develops for a Japanese game console maker. Stop making this more difficult then it needs to be. They are obviously favoring their home base of Japanese citizens over everyone else as that is the most popular console in Japan.

You guys can make whatever excuse you feel like but that is the harsh truth.

Why in gods name would Square Enix of all companies open the door to XBOX in Japan? Do you not understand anything about how Japan works and their national identity?

I wish people outside of Japan would stop pretending we are considered when it comes to decisions with FF14.

Thing is that after this long, it's fair to want the game on XBox, they did release both XIII and XV on XBox when those titles launched. So this isn't an issue of national favoritism or nationalism. PlayStation was supposed to be in the game since launch, and was added at ARR, at the time, XBox was considered as a platform to expand into as well, except they ran into, at least at the time, unreconcialbe differences. Square wanted XBox players to be able to access the game without also paying Microsoft for their online access, and Microsoft wanted separate servers so XBox players could play independently of PlayStation and PC gamers. While these may have been addressed since, this is why it wasn't done years ago.
