It is annoying to have an AoE stop casting when the target dies, despite there still being enemies around.
Man, I miss those old ground-targeted AoE skills.
Because it's targeted to that enemy. If the enemy is gone, there's nothing anchoring the spell target-wise. I agree, it could/should just re-target to the nearest enemy, but answering your question directly, that's why it stops casting.
I wonder if they could make it so that when the target dies midway through a spell that spell suddenly becomes a ground targeted version so that it could still go off?
Not all AoEs target, so now I also wonder if there isn't at least a way to change it so the cast comes out centered on you.

Useless, as a BLM I don't stay close to the enemys. And it's not better than nothing, nothing at least isn't costing me mana.
I don't think there is a real solution to the problem. But by switching your target often to the one with the most HP left (Flare and Foul do more damage on the targeted enemy anyway) you can work around the problem to some degree. Of course when the other DPS decides to burst down your target you are out of luck.
If my casts cancel out then the reason is usually that all the remaining enemys only have a few HP left. And then my help isn't needed anymore to kill them off in the next few seconds, so it does not matter in the end.
Pretty sure as long you got less then 0.50 sec left on cast, it will still go off even if mob dies.

is there auto targeting feature when our targeted enemy die? without pressing "tab" / "skill" button?
so basically like this...
- you cast spell (let say 6 seconds cast time)
- your target is this "enemy A"
- you are still casting, but the enemy A die
- so the game instantly put you to new (and already in target) enemy B (nearest and in front of your sight/screen)
- your spell is not cancel when it full and it shoot enemy B instead
if they could make something like that, as BLM iam a happy man, i've lost count how many times i cast flare and the enemy die like 1 seconds before my spell is off lol
player macros can instantly target a ground aoe on their selected target (friend or foe), i dont see why something similar couldnt be implemented (the spell goes off as if you were targetting their "corpse", as it were)--though if the "main" target is dead i guess it'd only do the 50% splash to everyone else, but it's certainly better than fizzling.
