Well I'm glad you enjoyed the story and more importantly caught the subtle (Ok not so subtle) point I was hoping to get across. Leveling in and of itself is almost never actually 'fun'. It is of course by its very nature kind of repetitive and long tasked. It is the attitude which you carry into a PT. The people you meet and your own willingness to tough it out that turning a boring grind into one of that most satisfying sessions of FFXIV's I've played so far. My story was hardly perfect and I even mention the hard times when I am dual purposing tanking some feisty and looking for that elusive 8th member. I never gave up and because of that I was able to keep myself and my new friends going.
FFXI was much like this actually. Much much more slow in actuality. It is because people didn't have the option to blast through the levels with a PL and the game made it very clear in the beginning that partying up was how things were done that made it much simpler to get people in the same mindset. The other major hiccup is because of PLing not only are those people jumping past what should be their stomping grounds losing out, so are the rest of us trying to get a stable EXP pt up and running. When you take 7 people from 20-30 in 2 hours while they AFK. You also take 7 people in range of forming PT's out of the equation. It has happened at least half a dozen times that I will form a partial PT to do leves and find enough people already out in Eorzea who could fill out the rest of my band. Yet they just want to sit there even though a PT is being handed to them, personal deliver style.
It sounds like you aren't having fun on your Lancer which is sad. I also notice you're grinding leves all by your onesy. Why not schedule a little leveling PT with your LS? Even if you only get a few at a time and don't feel like gathering an entire PT doing the leves together will at the very least make it a tad more fun.
