I don't think the fact that it's a mount necessarily rules out it being used to go to the moon. After all, you can ride the Skyslipper in cutscenes without ever obtaining the actual mount. I could see the Lunar Whale being a cash-grab: folks who pony get the mount all the time, those who don't get a few cutscenes with it and nothing more.

That said, I could also see it as being nothing more than a Festival-only homage, like Wind-up Rydia and so on.

I don't think that's a comparable situation because you see it first in the cutscene and then later get a chance to own it.

Having it freely for sale on Mog Station from level 1 and then making a big deal of it revealing it late in the story seems counterproductive.

I believe we will get to the Moon via a Tower of Babil reference from FFIV. In FFIV, Golbez was mind controlled by the Lunarian, Zemus, to collect all of the crystals of the elements, both Light and Dark. This was done in order to power the tower's dimensional elevator to teleport the Giant of Bab-il to Earth and destroy all sentient life to make room for the Lunarians. After you stop the giant with the aid of the good Lunarian, Cecil's uncle FuSoYa, he and Golbez use the same dimensional elevator to take the fight directly to Zemus and end things once and for all.

By that point though, the main cast had already obtained the Lunar Whale(it'll always be the Big Whale to me), so they used that to go to the Moon instead (mainly so the player can freely go to and from the moon).

Since we already teleport with reckless abandon, I think we'll be using the dimensional elevator from a tower we've not been to yet. Of course, we might wind up riding the tower wholesale, in order to have a base of operation on the Moon, in which we can freely teleport there and back again from.

The last Fan Fest mount was Cloud's Fenrir motorcycle from Advent Children and that had no effect on the story.

Right, that's what I thought too - specifically, an Allagan Ragnarok-class Internment Hulk - they're a close shape to that flying wedge in the logo, and it's already clearly established in the lore that they're spacecraft.

I doubt we get one from the remains of Dalamud though, as those weren't in too great shape (being blasted down to earth during the Calamity wouldn't have helped their structural intergrity). :P

Considering that there are Allagan ruins all over the place, it's not entirelly that unfeasable that the Ironworks may locate one and get it operational - it could even be called The Great Whale (to differentiate it from the Lunar Whale FFIV Amano art mount being offered with the upcoming digital Fanfest), and of course, yet another FFIV reference.

I just hope when they do, the BGM theme for either the mount or flying to the Moon is a Soken remix of this track.
