So what specifically is fun, that everyone agrees with. The answer is simple absolute nothing.
Yes, well it depends on the quality of the levelling process rather than on the type. Both types can be good. Self motivated levelling can be fun in many ways, and so can quest-based levelling, provided both types have been designed and implemented properly.

And btw the Goals in every mmo in existence has been to either progress through the story or Get gear, gear being the thing that keeps ppl playing for a long duration. Most ppl do story line to get gear....
... that's pretty sad, both because for many games it's true. But it's also sad because it's not entirely true either and it's weird you think that way.

Games can foster more goals than just getting the best gear. Some games have territorial control/protection as a major goal, and overarching political intrigue. Even FFXI had a progression system that was linked with content. In order to grind up ranks at specific locations, you needed to do certain quests, so there were miniature goals along the way to progression. So the goal there was to do quests, not for gear, but to reach new areas and further your adventures. Some MMOs let you alter the landscape with the goal being the change the world. The ultimate goal of an MMO should be to create an interesting experience, not necessarily just to rank up for the futile purpose of getting the best gear.

Gear can be a reward, supplement, or incentive to interesting experiences, but if it's the only motivating factor for playing then the MMO has totally failed.

That's your opinion. And despite your penchant to express it as it was absolute, it's not. In any case, whatever your opinion of that content is, it is content, therefore it completely disproves your previous post about there being nothing to do from level 15 onwards.

Disseminating false information is never a good thing.

viion if u hate ffxiv so much, why are u here? same goes to everone else. sorry but if you find 99% of the game boring, Id just quit. Chances are, nothing added will even please you and your taking up unnessisary space.

For those hating 99% of what ffxiv has, maybe another game is more your style. And you should consider that. There really needs to come to a point where ppl gotta just move on. Your not helping the game out, and chances are you will never be pleased.

And as for xi gear. Single pieces barely did anything. To see any difference you had to stack it. Just because one piece may not make you "uberleet" using it in combination of gear will flesh it out. And honestly gear should never be the end all be all. It get dull seeing everyone in the same gear.

I never said quest-based levelling was better than self-motivated levelling.

But while we're on the subject, the thing I hate about some people around here is how they're always so quick to attack something rather than provide solutions or compromises for how it could work. I don't mean you're like this, because at least you acknowledged that it was the "execution" which was bad, but it's a very prevalent outlook all the same.

You see, maybe FFXIV could look at games with quest-based progression and see what made those games bad and then learn from their mistakes and actually IMPROVE upon the systems.

I'm here because I want the game to change, and so do others. As you can see those that disliked the game have gone and this has what made the playerbase go from hundreds of thousands instantly down to a a few thousand of what we have. SE is a business, they want profit, so they want to bring back players who left, hell they've admitted this themselves lmao its quite pathetic "maybe those playing now can tell their friends to come back" so even SE want the people that gave up, to come back.

And because those players dont come back and express their feelings, that are pure-gone players, money lost for SE. I dont believe in just giving up, I know this game has potential, it doesnt right now but if enough people express their feelings maybe SE will eventually do something good. XI took a long time to become good and it only became good due to forums and people expressing their opinion.

As for playing another game, I am. I went back to XI now im 50 on XIV, I also play TERA now and then but ultimately im waiting on the eu/us release for that as there will be new servers.

Also quest based levelling is not bad. A lot prefer it as you're always doing different thigns and constantly moving around. I'd much prefer it over guildleves (which btw is just identical except you're pinned to a few quests and pinned to 1 location)

No offense, but if you played the game as much as us, you'd hate it too. When I first learned of FFXIV, I thought it was amazing. But then i played it.

At first, I loved the crafting system and playing the market wards. I really enjoyed how a close-knit linkshell was needed to progress. Everyone was interdependent.

Basically I just played FF craftville for the first couple months.

But after I was the first on the server to make all the cool gear made from NM drops, and after the market wards became uniform and easily accessible, there wasn't really much to do anymore. And when I ranked up my DoW to 50, I began to understand why everyone was leaving. Leves are boring, there's no feeling of progression. Even NMs are utterly boring. They're boring even the first time you do them.

I feel like most of the things that made me even like the game in the first place are being taken away. There used to be potential and I could put up with the lack of content, but now there just seems to be so very little. And the reason Im active on these forums now is to try to affect a change in the development team and the direction they are taking this game so that maybe i can see potential in the game once again.

The implementation of aggro indicators, flat & boring NPC quests, the insistence on using the guildleve system even though nobody likes it... all these things are horrible, and it's like they can't make FFXIV into WoW fast enough.

    I want Tanaka back.

Entirely flawed point. There are plenty people around the forum that played the game as much as you. And they still enjoy the game.
No offense but your opinion != Everyone's opinion.

gift i'm not a picky person... the only game i ever "hated" was two worlds.
I don't hate WoW, though I may act like it I just had bad experiences on it. I didn't hate Aion, I just had a bad time on it. I didn't hate ffxi, And from what I seen UI don't hate ffxiv. I'm a lvling type person not an end game type person. My fun is just going out and making things dead.
I like the fact that this game was made with motion capture. I even like some of the so called "lack luster" animations.

The only thing I hated about two worlds was the graphics, the voice overs, and the progession. You had to skill up everything inorder to be mediocer.
The story line was pretty good, I kinda cheated my way through it as it was pretty bad to lvl up in the game.

I play all sorts of game like the sims or halo but mainly mmo. I'm pretty easy to please. I just play a game to have fun. I don;t need the game to please me. Or the devs tailor it to me. I also made suggestions on improvements, but all the complaining necro'ed them.

basicly I like to Role play in a role playing game. And ffxiv can have that wicked easily. I can role play as a fisherman/fish monger If i wanted to. I can role play a monk with powers over fire if I wanted to. I can role play a camp cook and give to to all the mages a fighters.
I was a bit shocked that se added alot of role play but no role play server.
